star this property answer text

Ministry of Defence (MOD) officials have received approximately 3,850 applications from Normandy veterans in the period 6 June 2014 to date; about 3,300 had been sent to the French authorities by April this year. The French system was overwhelmed by these and other applications from Allied nations, which have far exceeded expectations. We jointly developed a new administrative process with the French whereby, since July 2015, 100 cases per week have been re-submitted to the French authorities.

The MOD is not routinely informed when an individual veteran is awarded the Legion d'Honneur as this is a matter for the French authorities. MOD officials understand that around 150 awards had been made by the beginning of July and that, subsequently, approximately 950 additional awards have been approved; of these we believe that about 600 may have been sent out. I am confident that this number will increase significantly over the coming weeks and months.
more like this

star this property answer text

Serving or former members of the UK Armed Forces can make a complaint if they feel that they have been wronged on a matter that arises when they are, or were, subject to Service law.

The Ministry of Defence worked closely with the first Service Complaints Commissioner, to see how the Service complaints process could be made more efficient whilst maintaining fairness, and strengthening the Commissioner role. This was the basis of the Armed Forces (Service Complaints and Financial Assistance) Bill which received Royal Assent on 26 March 2015.

This Act shortens the complaints process, and replaces the Commissioner with a new Service Complaints Ombudsman. Implementation is expected early in 2016. The Ombudsman will have significant new powers through which we will be held to account for the fairness, effectiveness and efficiency of how the system operates.
more like this

star this property answer text

Since 2013, it has been Ministry of Defence policy that mefloquine should only be prescribed after an individual risk assessment. To verify that an individual assessment has been undertaken in every case since 2013 would require the examination of the medical records of all individuals who have deployed since 2013. This could only be achieved at disproportionate cost.

Templates exist to optimise consistency in the preparation of personnel requiring anti-malarials, including mefloquine. Defence Primary Healthcare has a malaria protocol to guide clinicians to use these templates. Work is currently in hand to develop it further, taking previous lessons into account, to ensure that all individuals are assessed in a consistent manner.

more like this
