The UK's contribution to the Fund is not public spending and would have no fiscal implications on the UK: it does not add to our debt or deficit. With its preferred creditor status, lending to the IMF is one of the most credit-worthy institutions in the world and no-one who has ever provided money to the IMF has ever lost that money.</p> more like this

unstar this property answer text <p>The Government has discussed this issue with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and we share many of her concerns about the sentences. Mrs Pillay and I made statements on 29 and 28 April respectively expressing concern over the sentences, along with reports that some of the defendants may not have had adequate legal representation. It is the long-standing policy of the Government to oppose the death penalty in all circumstances as a matter of principle.</p> more like this

unstar this property answer text <p>The UK will be sending 90 short term observers, in addition to the 10 long term observers already in Ukraine, to join the observer mission being mounted by the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR). This will allow for an objective assessment as to whether the required standards are met. We also welcome the announcement by the OSCE/ODIHR that they will be providing advice and training on running elections.</p> more like this
