star this property answer text We are committed to reviewing our Action Plan in 2015. We will use a cross-Government approach, as we did when developing the National Action Plan, to reflect the fact that business and human rights runs across a broad range of Government activities and responsibilities. A cross-Government Steering Group, led by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and the department for Business Innovation and Skills, and including around 10 other government departments, oversees delivery of the Action Plan. A detailed implementation plan sets out the action needed to deliver against each of the Action Plan commitments, and the departments responsible for taking this forward. This provides a mechanism for ensuring that all Whitehall departments understand their roles in delivering the Action Plan, and for monitoring progress and holding departments to account. We are committed to reporting on progress in the FCO’s Annual Human Rights and Democracy Report. We are working with business and civil society to ensure that the Action Plan delivers real impacts and contributes to preventing human rights abuses by companies wherever they operate, or providing remedy when they occur. We will continue to consult and collaborate with key stakeholders in monitoring delivery of this plan and helping to refresh and update it in future.

star this property answer text The UK has been a strong and consistent supporter of the International Commission on Missing Persons (ICMP) since its creation in 1996. We support the ICMP in all of its program areas – the Western Balkans, Colombia, Iraq and Libya. The UK has provided grants to the ICMP for the following amounts: 2012: £18,101; 2013: £160,407; 2014: £253,051. These grants have supported projects which relate to deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) identification activities at the Tomasica Excavation Site in Bosnia and aiding the Government of Libya address the issue of missing persons. The UK also provides political support as the ICMP’s work supports our wider objectives on justice and accountability. With our Dutch colleagues, the UK has successfully led a recent initiative to develop an international agreement that will grant the ICMP a new, international legal status. more like this

star this property answer text Estimates of the number of political prisoners in Burma vary. Organisations such as the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (Burma) (AAPPB) monitor the figures and provide regular status updates. Their latest from October, indicates that there are 75 political prisoners remaining in Burma, down from 2,073 in March 2011. Our Embassy in Rangoon remains in close contact with the AAPPB and other civil society networks to support their work. We continue to press for the unconditional release of all political prisoners in Burma. more like this
