In line with the internationally agreed UN definition, these statistics define a migrant as someone changing their normal place of residence for more than a year. This includes students in net migration in the same way as other migrants. Other countries, including the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand also include students in their net migration figures. <br><br>Net migration measures the difference between the number of peoplecoming the UK and the number leaving, so if students return home after<br>their studies, their impact on long-term net migration will be minimal. The ONS has recently improved its methodology so that it is possible to<br>better identify students in the emigration flows to give a more accurate measure of the contribution of students to overall net migration.In the last year, 124,000 non-EU students came to Britain to stay for more than 12 months, and the ONS estimates that only 50,000 left the country. <br><br>All migrants who are in the UK for 12 months or more have an impact on our communities, infrastructure and public services. Changing the way we measure migration would not make any difference to our student migration policy. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 30/04/2014 answer text <p>The Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) advises the Government on economic issues relating to migration.<br><br>On 1 July 2013 the MAC published a &quot;Report on the economic and labour market impacts of tier 1 entrepreneur and investor migrants to the UK&quot; which it had commissioned from the Migration Observatory. The report made a number of findings, although it concluded that it was too early to make a full assessment of the economic contribution of the two routes without further research. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 29/09/2014 answer text <p>The Government's PREVENT programme aims to prevent people from becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism. It includes programmes to deal with extremist groups, including those that have been proscribed by the Government. <br><br>It includes work to challenge terrorist ideology (including disrupting extremist speakers and removing material online) and to intervene and stop <br>people being radicalised. In the context of Syria and Iraq, we work to dissuade people from travelling there. We also have a range of interventions, from arrest at port for those suspected of committing terrorist offences, to support for people at risk from radicalisation.<br><br>The Government's Channel programme provides tailored support to people who have been identified as at risk of radicalisation. Referrals to Channel come from a range of sources including families, police, local authorities and others. <br><br>Since April 2012 there have been over 2000 referrals to Channel and hundreds of people have been offered support. In order to ensure our frontline services are able to deliver this support, since June 2011, we have provided training on tackling extremism to over 24,000 frontline public sector workers and are rolling out a revised version of the training this autumn.<br><br>The police work with the internet industry to remove terrorist material hosted in the UK or overseas and are making good progress. Since February 2010, the Counter Terrorism Internet Referral Unit (CTIRU) has taken down more than 49,000 pieces of unlawful terrorist-related content which encourages or glorifies acts of terrorism. Over 30,000 of these have been removed since December 2013.<br><br>In parallel, we have made it easier for the public to report terrorist and extremist content they are concerned about via www.gov.uk/report-terrorism.<br><br>As the Prime Minister announced on 1 September, we keep this work under constant review and are looking at what more we can add to this comprehensive package of measures designed to ensure that we continue to do all we can to prevent the spread of extremism.</p><p> </p> answering member constituency Old Bexley and Sidcup answering member printed James Brokenshire question first answered 29/09/2014 15:57:08 answering member 1530 label Biography information for James Brokenshire

We refuse a visa to any individual we consider a threat to the national security of the United <br>Kingdom. The Home Secretary can exclude individuals who are a threat to the security of this country. The Home Secretary excludes foreign nationals who are a threat to the security of this country, and can deprive citizenship from dual nationals, or naturalised British citizens in certain circumstances. With the assistance of carriers who provide advance passenger information we operate no fly arrangements which prevent people who pose a terrorist threat from travelling to the United Kingdom, and have stopped the travel of a small number of people. On arrival at our ports and airports Border Force's operating mandate requires them to conduct checks on 100% of passengers and the police have the power to examine individuals at ports and the border to establish whether they appear to be involved in terrorism. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 24/10/2014 answer text <p>Since the Prime Minister’s Extremism Task Force (ETF) made its recommendations in December 2013, we have made considerable progress in tackling extremism and <br>reducing the risk of radicalisation. This Government has excluded more hate preachers than ever before, and has regularly disrupted events which feature extremist preachers. We have restricted access to online terrorist material, the majority of which is hosted overseas: since December 2013 we have removed from the internet over 32,000 pieces of unlawful terrorist-related content, taking the overall total to over 51,000 since 2010.</p><p>We have seen a significant rise in referrals to our multi-agency safeguarding programme, Channel, which provides tailored support to people identified as at risk of radicalisation, including from Islamist extremism. The Association of Chief Police Officers reported a 58% increase in the past year. Since April 2012 there have been over 2000 Channel referrals. Hundreds have been offered support under the programme.</p><p>We have made progress with our ‘Workshop to Raise Awareness of Prevent’ (WRAP), a training tool which teaches frontline workers how to identify and support those at risk of radicalisation. Since the revised Prevent strategy (June 2011), we have trained over 100,000 frontline public sector workers to identify and support those at risk. We are currently rolling out new, updated training.In the 2013/14 financial year, Prevent practitioners in our 30 priority areas worked with over 250 mosques, 50 faith groups and 70 community groups. We have delivered over 180 community-based Prevent projects since 2011, and are currently supporting over 70. All of our current Prevent projects are focused on the current threat, including Syria and Iraq. Since early 2012, these projects have reached over 45,000 people.<br><br>In September the Home Secretary announced that the Home Office will now assume responsibility for a new Extremism Strategy. The strategy will aim to build up society to <br>identify extremism, confront it, challenge it and defeat it. Around a third of these have focused on schools and supplementary schools – protecting children from extremism and radicalisation. Local Authority Prevent Co-ordinators brief head teachers, teachers and safeguarding leads in schools and regularly provide training to frontline staff.</p><p>There are currently seven local authorities who have created specific posts dedicated to working with schools funded by the Home Office. Where these projects have been delivered, areas have reported an increase in teachers’ confidence in identifying and dealing with extremism. Preventing and detecting fraud is one of Her Majesty's Passport Office's (HMPO's) key objectives and in 2013-14, of 9,033 cases of fraud were detected.<br><br>The British passport is one of the most secure documents of its kind. Working with national and international law enforcement agencies, HMPO continues to monitor and review the security of the document in order to prevent and detect fraud both, domestically and overseas. This includes introducing a range of automated system checks; increased interventions with applicants who report their passport as lost or stolen on multiple occasions; and an enhanced facial recognition system. The numbers of asylum seekers in receipt of support are available broken down by Local Authority.<br><br>As at the end of June 2014, there were 26 asylum seekers receiving Section 95 support from Havering Local Authority. These figures exclude any asylum seekers who may be living in Havering but are not receiving support, as figures are not held.<br><br>The numbers of asylum seekers in receipt of section 95 support, broken down by Local Authority, are published on a quarterly basis by the Home Office in Table as_16_q of the Immigration Statistics release.
