star this property answer text <p>The costs are paid per by-election. Costs vary according to the number of electors. The current cost of a whole House by-election is £1440; a Labour or Liberal Democrat by-election costs £570, and a Conservative or Crossbench by-election costs £600; all costs are inclusive of VAT. This is in addition to the cost of House of Lords staff time spent organising the by-election which forms part of their normal duties and is not costed separately.</p> more like this

On that occasion, these tasks were handled by a member of House staff. If a vacancy were created by one of those members leaving the House, the seat in the House would revert back to the previous party or group. However, while those members are not sitting in their original party or group, they do not form part of the electorate for any hereditary peer by-elections that may arise in those groupings.</p>

star this property answer text <p>The House has agreed to a number of temporary changes to its usual working practices and procedures in light of the Covid-19 pandemic. One of these changes was to delay any by-elections under Standing Order 10 until at least Tuesday 8 September. Without this delay a by-election would have had to be held before 26 June owing to a retirement.</p><p>In practical terms it is possible to put the arrangements in place for by-elections to be held in a way that reflects our current circumstances and ways of working. So a further extension is not necessary.</p> more like this
