star this property answer text <p>In the last 12 months there has been an increase of 238,000 disabled people in work. That is really positive, but there is more to do.</p><p> </p><p>We have been very clear that the gap between the employment rates of disabled people and non-disabled people remains too big and have committed to halving it.</p><p> </p><p>Government cannot achieve this ambition alone so we are working closely with disabled people, their organisations, employers and employment support providers to develop our strategy to enable more disabled people to get into, remain in and progress in work.</p><p> </p><p>The Disability Confident Campaign, which actively promotes the Access to Work scheme, is key to supporting employers in working with Government to halve the disability employment gap.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>The disability employment rate gap is the difference between the employment rate of disabled people and the employment rate of non-disabled people.</p><p> </p><p>One way to measure the gap is using the Labour Force Survey (LFS). The latest data available from the LFS relates to January 2015 to March 2015. The latest LFS figures are set out in the table below. This table shows the disability employment rate gap along with the disability employment rate gaps for people who have difficulty in hearing and those who have difficulty in seeing. Deafblind is not listed as a main disabling condition either on LFS,</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>It is not possible to say how many people whose Access to Work awards currently exceed the proposed limit on those awards are deafblind as there is nowhere to record deafblind specifically on the Access to Work computer system (DISC).</p><p>From December 2014, all deafblind cases are administered by the Visually Impaired specialist team. And therefore should be recorded under the Visual Impairments category for Access to Work allocation purposes.</p>

star this property answer text <p>The Government is committed to giving disabled people the opportunity to fulfil their potential and achieve their ambitions. Work is an important part of this. That is why we have committed to halving the disability employment gap, requiring us to transform policy, practice and public attitudes.</p><p>We must build on recent progress. We have already:</p><p>- extended Access to Work to provide support to more disabled people in pre-employment, such as work experience and also to undertake employment-based training, such as supported internships, traineeships and self-arranged work experience.</p><p>- launched Specialist Employability Support, an innovative new programme which provides intensive, specialist support to the disabled people who need the most help.</p><p>- continued to work with employers through our Disability Confident campaign to ensure that they understand the benefits of recruiting and retaining disabled people in work.</p><p>- announced new funding in the Budget of up to £100m per year for additional practical support to provide the right incentives and support to enable those who have limited capability, but who have some potential to prepare, for work to move closer to the labour market, and when they are ready, back into work.</p><p>- committed to spending £43m over the next 3 years to develop the evidence base on what works for those with common mental health conditions retain and return to employment. This will be done through a range of voluntary mental health and employment pilots that will go live next year</p><p><br>We set up the Work and Health unit in the summer to bring together the Work and Health agendas, to help disabled people and people with health conditions get into work, stay in work, and return to work with the right support and we are developing our plans in this area.</p><p>The Government will set out it its spending plans for this Parliament in the forthcoming Spending Review.</p>

star this property answer text <p>Progress against the disability employment gap commitment is a key factor in progress towards full employment. This is consistent with the Government’s manifesto commitment which said ‘as part of our objective to achieve full employment, we will aim to halve the disability employment gap’. The annual report on progress towards full employment will include an update on the Government’s progress towards halving the disability employment gap.</p><br /><p>Disability is defined in the Equality Act 2010: “A person has a disability if (a) [they] have a physical or mental impairment, and (b) the impairment has a substantial and long-term adverse effect on [their] ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities.”</p><br /><p>Employment in the UK is measured by the Labour Force Survey (LFS).
