Friend, the Secretary of State for Education, meets regularly with Cabinet colleagues to discuss the Department for Education's agenda.</p><p> </p><p>The Department for Education committed in 2017, jointly with the Department for Health and Social Care (DHSC), to an ambitious programme to improve children and young people’s mental health provision in and around schools and colleges. This is highlighted in the Government’s response to the green paper, ‘Transforming Children and Young People’s Mental Health Provision’. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 15/07/2019 answer text <p>Following an assessment, the Department has found no evidence to demonstrate that entries to the design and technology (D&amp;T) GCSE have fallen as a direct consequence of an increase in students taking the English Baccalaureate (EBacc). The gradual decline in the proportion of pupils entered for D&amp;T GCSE started in 2001, when the subject became non-compulsory at Key Stage 4. The EBacc was first introduced in 2010.</p><p> </p><p>The EBacc encourages young people to take core academic subjects, keeping their options open for further study and future careers. The Department is clear that it should be studied alongside other subjects, such as D&amp;T, and it has been designed to allow pupils to do this.</p><p> </p><p>The Department has reformed D&amp;T GCSE so that it has a greater emphasis on the iterative design process, something that subject experts advise is at the core of contemporary industry practice. It also includes more on the technical knowledge required, including cutting edge technology and processes. These structural changes make it more accessible to pupils and easier for teachers to deliver whilst maintaining the rigour and challenge the Department expects of a GCSE subject. It will take time for the new GCSE to embed given the significant changes. The Department continues to attract more graduates into teaching and have increased the bursary offered for most D&amp;T teacher trainees through the introduction of a £12,000 bursary for trainees with a 2:2 or higher. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 10/07/2019 answer text <p>Information on when schools finish their school day is not held centrally.</p><p>It is unacceptable for schools to shorten their working week when it is not a direct action to support and enhance their pupils’ education. According to the Institute for Fiscal Studies, funding for the average primary school class is £132,000, and funding for that same class of children in secondary school would be £171,000. These amounts are to cover a full five-day week in term time.</p><p>All schools have the autonomy to decide the structure and duration of their school day, which includes the flexibility to decide when their school day should start and finish. The Department trusts that headteachers will do this in a sensible manner.</p><p>All maintained schools are required to educate pupils for at least 380 sessions each school year. The guidance sets out that no school uniform should be so expensive as to leave pupils or their families feeling unable to apply to, or attend, a school of their choice, due to the cost of the uniform. In England, some local authorities provide discretionary grants to help with buying school uniforms. Local authorities that offer these grants set their own criteria for eligibility.</p><p>Schools may also offer individual clothing schemes, such as offering second-hand uniform at reduced prices. This would be a decision for the school to make.</p><p>The Department’s non-statutory guidance on school uniform places extra emphasis on the need for schools to give highest priority to cost considerations.
