star this property answer text <p>The health and wellbeing of National Health Service staff is, and has always been, very important to the Government. At the beginning of the COVID-19 outbreak we assessed that they would potentially need additional mental health and occupational health support.</p><p>We commissioned NHS England and NHS Improvement to develop a comprehensive package of emotional, psychological and practical support for NHS staff - building on the support already in place in local NHS organisations. The support package was launched by NHS England and NHS Improvement on 8 April.</p><p>NHS England and NHS Improvement have also launched a new framework, which will enable employers to buy-in additional occupational health support for their staff. This will supplement support already available in NHS organisations.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>NHS England’s recent announcement &quot;A healthy NHS workforce&quot;, aims to raise staff awareness and understanding of mental health issues and ensure staff have access to help, support and treatment when they need it.</p><br /><p>“A healthy NHS workforce” includes, for example, line manager training and, providing NHS staff rapid access to talking therapies. This is currently being tested as part of the Healthy Workforce programme led by NHS England.</p><br /><p>NHS Employers is working with NHS England and Public Health England on improving NHS staff health and wellbeing. star this property answer text <p>The Government included in its Mandate to NHS England an objective for them to “make partnership a success”. This includes “<em>championing the Time to Change campaign to raise awareness of mental health issues and reduce stigma, including in the NHS workforce</em>”.</p><br /><p>In taking this forward, NHS England recently announced the &quot;A healthy NHS workforce&quot; initiative. This aims to raise staff awareness and understanding of mental health issues, helping to ensure they have access to help, support and treatment when they need it. A copy of the announcement is attached.</p><br /><p>“A healthy NHS workforce” includes, for example, line manager trainingand, providing NHS staff rapid access to talking therapies. Thisis currently being tested as part of the Healthy Workforce programme led by NHS England.</p><br /><p>In addition, NHS Employers have launched the <em>How are you feeling NHS? </em>toolkit. This has been developed with NHS staff to help bridge a gap in understanding and enable them to: talk openly and regularly about their emotional health; assess the impact emotional wellbeing has on themselves, their colleagues and patients, and help with action planning to enable more good days than bad. We commissioned NHS England to develop a comprehensive emotional, psychological and practical support package for all NHS staff in addition to existing support that is already available.</p><p>NHS England and NHS Improvement launched the support package on 8 April 2020 and it includes a helpline and text service for counselling and support, a dedicated bereavement helpline, and a range of well-being apps. All the support available can be accessed via the following link:</p><p><a href="https://people.nhs.uk/help/" target="_blank">people.nhs.uk/help/</a></p><p>The NHS is continuing to update the support available in this package, in line with the feedback they receive.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>The Department continues to monitor overall staffing levels across the National Health Service (NHS), and we are working across Government to ensure there are sufficient staff to provide a high-quality service. We have committed to deliver 50,000 more nurses in the National Health Service This will help support the 1.4 million people who make up the NHS workforce and address the longstanding NHS nursing shortages that were identified in the Interim NHS People Plan. star this property answer text <p>We have worked closely with NHS England to put in place a comprehensive package of mental health and wellbeing services for staff, including counselling helplines, support for line managers to have health and wellbeing conversations with their staff and free access to mental health apps. Last autumn, we invested £30 million to strengthen mental health support and enhance occupational health in the National Health Service. This funding is being used to set up mental health hubs that will provide outreach and assessment services to help staff receive rapid access to mental health services.</p><p>Staff referred will be treated by local mental health specialists and those with severe needs will be referred to a specialist centre of excellence. The investment will create a national support service for those deemed most at risk of severe trauma, such as critical care staff. Proactive engagement with staff is routinely undertaken to assess the mental health effects of the pandemic and understand what further support should be provided.</p>

The national health and wellbeing offer, which includes a helpline and text service for counselling and support and access to free wellbeing apps, remains available for all NHS staff. This will be strengthened during winter in response to staff needs and in line with the commitments we made in July in the NHS People Plan. This includes setting up mental health hubs to provide proactive outreach and co-ordinate referrals to treatment, enhanced occupational health support and the introduction of Wellbeing Guardians on all boards. star this property answer text <p>National Health Service trusts are responsible for ensuring that appropriate mental health support and provision is in place for all of their staff, including those on neonatal intensive care units. Mental health support services provided by trusts could include access to occupational health services, employee assistance programmes, confidential counselling helplines, processes for open sharing of experiences, crisis and trauma response provision and team and peer support structures.</p><p>The Department is supporting them in this through the NHS staff health and wellbeing framework and NHS Improvement’s NHS staff health and wellbeing collaborative. Both incorporate the mental health standards in ‘Thriving at Work – a review of mental health and employers’ produced by Mind.</p> more like this
