This has focussed on strengthening the moderate opposition, building resilience against extremists, fostering civil society structures in besieged areas, promoting Human Rights, delivering basic governance and laying the foundations for a more peaceful and inclusive future for Syria. Further details of our funding can be found on the Gov.uk website.</p><p>The UK has always punched above its weight in helping deal with the effects of the Syria crisis. Our vision for Syria is an open, democratic society with greater social, economic and political participation where violent extremism does not have a place and where refugees feel safe to return. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 27/04/2017 answer text <p>The British Government has been clear in its condemnation of regime attacks against civilians in Syria, including the appalling chemical weapons attack on 4 April in Khan Sheikhoun which killed over 70 people and wounded hundreds. We supported the US action against the Shayrat airbase on 7 April. We hope it will deter further use of chemical weapons by the Syrian regime. By destroying up to 20 strike aircraft, this operation will have reduced the regime's ability to bomb civilians.</p><p>The UK also continues to support the UN mediated negotiations on a political settlement. Within the Review, we also questioned the regime about torture and disappearances of detainees from formal and informal detention centres in areas under state control and called for the release of those unlawfully detained. We have also discussed the plight of detainees with UN officials. Its report of February 2016, &quot;Out of Sight, Out of Mind: Deaths in Detention in the Syrian Arab Republic&quot; detailed its concerns and it continues to monitor and report on the situation. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 26/01/2017 answer text <p>The number of opposition groups fighting against the Asad regime in Syria has fluctuated throughout the conflict. There are hundreds of different groups, but many of these are very small and based only in a particular area, or are sub-units of larger groups. Groups frequently appear, disappear, merge or split. It is therefore not possible to specify a number.</p><p>The UK continues to work in support of a lasting political settlement based on political transition. A key part of this is our support for the moderate opposition which is committed to working towards a negotiated settlement. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 24/01/2017 answer text <p>When the Foreign Secretary summoned the Russian and Iranian ambassadors on 15 December, he made clear that; &quot;both Russia and Iran have failed to uphold their obligations under international humanitarian law, specifically by failing to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid to civilians during the months when eastern Aleppo was besieged.&quot; The Iranian Foreign Ministry responded that the statements issued by the Foreign Secretary were &quot;unrealistic, unconsidered and destructive&quot;. On 19 December, Russia joined the UN Security Council members in voting in favour of UN Security Council Resolution 2328 on the humanitarian situation in Aleppo. The resolution requested the UN to monitor evacuations from Eastern Aleppo and demanded all parties provide the UN with safe, immediate and unimpeded access. Friend the Member for Uxbridge and South Ruislip (Boris Johnson) and the Russian Ambassador. The Chancellor of the Exchequer, my Rt Hon. Friend the Member for Runnymede and Weybridge (Mr Hammond) did not meet the Russian Ambassador in 2016 prior to his current role. Minister for Europe and the Americas Sir Alan Duncan had an in-depth discussion on Syria in August 2016 with the Russian Ambassador during which he expressed the UK's concern about the situation in Aleppo and our shared interest in working together on a political settlement in Syria.</p><p>In addition to bilateral engagement, we have regular dialogue with Russia on Syria in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), and have discussed the humanitarian situation in Aleppo on a number of occasions. The Resolution specifically requested the UN to monitor evacuations from eastern Aleppo. The UK strongly supported this action in view of our profound concerns at reports of atrocities taking place as eastern Aleppo was being evacuated. The UN has now reported that evacuations from eastern Aleppo are complete. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 22/12/2016 answer text <p>The regime has only opened one evacuation route through the Ramouseh corridor in regime controlled south west Aleppo and has restricted the involvement of impartial humanitarian actors in the process. We are extremely concerned at the way the regime and its backers have been conducting themselves in the areas where it has retaken control. The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights has reported the summary execution of 82 people, including women and children; there have also been reports of people disappearing as they reach regime held areas; and of young men being forced to join the Syrian army. That is why we supported UN Security Council Resolution 2328 which was passed on 19 December. It demands full access for the UN across Syria and in particular requests the UN to monitor evacuations from eastern Aleppo.
