	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 06/07/2020 answer text <p>Improving the management of forests is a priority for DFID’s work to tackle climate change and protect the environment and biodiversity. DFID supports a range of interventions, including working with governments, businesses and community groups to strengthen governance of the forest sector and address the illegal timber trade, as well as public-private partnerships that promote sustainable investment in agriculture, by integrating measures to protect and restore forests.</p><p>This support does not directly target the replanting of native trees, and so data is not collected on the number of trees planted. Improved management and protection however creates the conditions needed for regeneration of native trees to take place naturally. This scheme aims to invest £18 million on new woodland planting each year.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>We are also encouraging more tree planting in several other ways. For example, by attracting private investment in woodland creation through the Woodland Carbon Code and looking for ways to improve the Environmental Impact Assessment process. A number of other initiatives are also in place, including the Woodland Carbon Code, to attract other funding to ensure that planting rates are maintained at the average level over the previous Programme of 2,600 hectares per year. The government is providing up to £50 million of guaranteed future payments over the next thirty years to those who plant qualifying woodland, to purchase carbon credits as trees grow and sequester carbon. Those carbon credits could then be sold, reducing the overall cost to taxpayers. The government will meet this guarantee at future spending reviews. The Government has made major commitments to enable more tree planting in recent years, including through creation of a £640 million Nature for Climate Fund.</p><p> </p><p>Over 4,000 hectares of woodland have been planted with Government support in England over the last three years at a cost of approximately £17 million.</p><p> </p><p>While complying with the United Kingdom Forestry Standard, land managers and owners decide which species of tree to plant on their land. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 20/03/2020 answer text <p>To drive an unprecedented step-change in planting and reach net zero, the Government is investing in tree planting in England through the recently announced £640 million Nature for Climate Fund. This supports our commitment to increase planting across the UK to 30,000 hectares of trees per year by 2025.</p><p> </p><p>The Government supports woodland creation through grants and incentives. These include the recently launched Woodland Carbon Guarantee, in addition to the existing Countryside Stewardship, Woodland Carbon Fund, Woodland Creation Planning Grant and the Urban Tree Challenge Fund. These grants are available to local authorities, land managers and community-led organisations across England, including those in the West Midlands.</p><p> </p><p>While we do not set specific targets for individual constituencies, we are working hard to increase the uptake of grant schemes across England, and strongly encourage eligible organisations to take advantage of this support.</p><p> </p><p>The Government continues to consider ways to further incentivise land managers and owners to plant more trees.
