However, between 2012 and 2020, more than one million National Health Service staff and one million social care staff had received basic dementia awareness training. The training needs for relevant staff are set out in the Dementia Training Standards Framework. In particular, the Social Care Institute for Excellence has published advice on COVID-19 and dementia in care homes in collaboration with NHS England and NHS Improvement, which was last updated in May 2021. It discusses four clinical situations to illustrate some common challenges to supporting someone with dementia and provides clear advice on how to approach these to ensure the person with dementia is adequately supported. Since 1 April 2015, newly appointed health care assistants and social care support workers, including those providing care to people with dementia, have been undergoing training as part of the national implementation of the Care Certificate. NHSX has rapidly established a team to support those who are vulnerable, isolated or in social care with technology during Coronavirus (Covid-19). The team has taken several steps to ensure that care homes have the technological capability to maintain social contact for their residents, including: a pilot of 2,050 Facebook Portal devices, and negotiating broadband deals to make sure care homes have the connectivity to access video calls. Twelve of the major telecoms providers have also agreed to work with care homes that have slow, or no broadband connections, to improve connectivity wherever possible. This includes commissioning research on the best ways to mitigate the psychological and social impact of COVID-19 on people with dementia living in the community and their family carers. Work has already started on this research.</p><p>In addition, the Department has produced a range of guidance to support people during the COVID-19 pandemic.
