The 2013 Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Regulations seek to reduce the amount of WEEE going to landfill by encouraging its separate collection and subsequent treatment, reuse, recovery, recycling and environmentally sound disposal.</p><p> </p><p>Reports on the amount of WEEE (both household and non-household) collected in the UK under the WEEE Regulations is published by the Environment Agency here: <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/statistical-data-sets/waste-electrical-and-electronic-equipment-weee-in-the-uk" target="_blank">https://www.gov.uk/government/statistical-data-sets/waste-electrical-and-electronic-equipment-weee-in-the-uk</a>.</p><p> </p><p>Last year, producers financed the collection of 493,323 tonnes of household WEEE.</p><p>Additionally, based on a study carried out by the Waste and Resources Action Programme, we estimate that between 250k and 273k tonnes of large domestic appliances (cookers, washing machines etc.) are collected with scrap metal and recycled outside the WEEE system every year.</p> answering member constituency Suffolk Coastal answering member printed Dr Thérèse Coffey question first answered 30/04/2019 10:02:27 answering member 4098 label Biography information for Dr Thérèse Coffey

	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 30/04/2019 answer text <p>Defra has not issued any guidance on the processing of consumer electronics in landfill or removal from landfill sites after metals have been harvested from them.</p><p> </p><p>The 2013 Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Regulations seek to reduce the amount of WEEE going to landfill by encouraging its separate collection and subsequent treatment, re-use, recovery, recycling and environmentally sound disposal.</p><p>Defra has issued statutory guidance on the best available collection, treatment, recovery and recycling techniques (BATRRT) for WEEE at approved authorised treatment facilities. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 13/10/2017 answer text <p>The Environment Agency regulates the export of waste in England, including waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE). There are a number of legal mechanisms in place to control exports of WEEE. These include</p><ul><li><p>A ban on exporting hazardous electrical waste from the UK to developing countries;</p></li><li><p>A requirement to register with the Environment Agency if you export WEEE;</p></li><li><p>A requirement to notify the Environment Agency if you export some types of WEE.</p><p>The Environment Agency has increased the number of inspections of sites suspected of illegal waste exports and works in partnership with the Police, Border Agency and Interpol. The Environment Agency estimates that the amount of illegally exported electrical and household waste from England fell approximately 17% between 2014 and 2016. This reduction in illegal exports is estimated to have saved the UK economy £2.75 million over those two years. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 12/02/2019 answer text <p>The Environment Agency takes a pro-active intelligence led approach to ensure it targets those posing a high export risk. Its use of Stop Notices has proved to be an effective tool in prohibiting the movement of waste prior to export. The costs associated with returning a waste shipment that is found to be unfit for export to the site of origin for further treatment can accumulate to be a significant cost to the exporter. Sites loading WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) are targeted for checks and site visits to provide advice and guidance on their responsibilities.</p><p> </p><p>In 2017 the Environment Agency inspected over 1,000 shipping containers and returned 367 of these to their site of loading. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 26/02/2018 answer text <p>The UK continues to meet all obligations arising from the European Union Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive. In 2016, producers financed over 580,000 tonnes of household electrical waste recycling and re-use, an increase of over 20% since 2013, when revised regulations were introduced. The 2017 figures have not been published.</p><p> </p><p>The Government published its 25 Year Environment Plan on 11 January. This includes a commitment to publish a new Resources and Waste Strategy later this year.
