star this property answer text <p>We have no plans to mandate the provision of the annual flu vaccination.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>Frontline health and social care workers have a duty of care to protect their patients and service users, colleagues and family members from infection. Therefore, as in previous years, free flu immunisation should be offered by National Health Service organisations to all employees directly involved in delivering care. This is not an NHS service, but an occupational health responsibility being provided to NHS staff by employers. Social care providers and independent primary care providers should also consider vaccination of staff.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>The Health and Social Care Act 2008, Code of Practice on the prevention and control of infections and related guidance, emphasises the need to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, that care workers are free of and are protected from exposure to infections that can be caught at work and that all staff are suitably educated in the prevention and control of infection associated with the provision of health and social care.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>The Code of Practice states that registered providers should ensure that policies and procedures are in place in relation to the prevention and control of infection. This includes access to occupational health services and that employers should make vaccine available free of charge to employees if a risk assessment indicates that it is needed.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>A copy of the Health and Social Care Act 2008, Code of Practice is attached.</p><p> </p>

Employers are therefore agreeing to offer fair terms and conditions to all of their employees and to take active steps to ensure that their employment practice complies with employment legislation, including paying the National Minimum Wage as a minimum, and provides additional benefits or enhanced terms and conditions where possible. star this property answer text <p>As an independent body, it is for the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), in consultation with stakeholders, to consider NHS England’s request to defer implementation of its guidance on sofosbuvir (Sovaldi) for the treatment of chronic hepatitis C.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>NICE recently consulted on extending the funding period and we understand that NICE expects to publish the outcome of that consultation, along with its final draft guidance on sofosbuvir, later this month. The Department’s response to the consultation will be published alongside other stakeholders’ comments. We are confident that NICE will carefully consider all the comments it has received before taking a final decision.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>NICE currently expects to publish its final guidance on sofosbuvir in February 2015, although this is subject to any appeals being received.</p><p> </p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>The Government is committed to ensuring that patients have access to clinically and cost effective treatments, including those for hepatitis C.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) is the independent body responsible for providing advice to the National Health Service on the clinical and cost-effectiveness of health technologies.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>NICE is currently appraising a number of new drugs for use in the treatment of hepatitis C under its technology appraisal process. This review will consider how to speed up access for NHS patients to cost-effective new diagnostics, medicines and devices.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>The review will examine the pathway from ‘first in human’ trials, through licensing and health technology appraisal, to commissioning and clinical practice. It will set out both short and long-term options for action by Government and relevant bodies, including NICE, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency and NHS England, and mark a major contribution to the policy debate.</p><p> </p>

star this property answer text <p>The Department’s National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) funds a range of research relating to treatment of Crohn’s disease.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>The NIHR has awarded nearly £1.5 million over five years to August 2018 for a research professorship at the University of Oxford. This is focussed on re-defining Crohn’s disease at a molecular level to identify new biomarkers and therapies.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>The NIHR Health Technology Assessment programme is seeking to commission a systematic review looking at whether patients can be identified who may need early intensive treatment in Crohn’s disease.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>The NIHR Clinical Research Network is currently recruiting patients to six studies relating to treatment of Crohn’s disease.</p><p> </p><p><strong> </strong></p><p> </p><p>The NIHR welcomes funding applications for research into any aspect of human health, including Crohn’s disease. These applications are subject to peer review and judged in open competition, with awards being made on the basis of the importance of the topic to patients and health and care services, value for money and scientific quality.</p><p> </p>

However, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) 2012 guideline <em>Crohn’s Disease Management in Adults, Children and Young People</em>, states that there are currently at least 115,000 people in the United Kingdom with Crohn's disease.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>The NICE guideline sets out best practice on the diagnosis, treatment, care and support of people with Crohn’s disease. This includes, ‘<em>M</em><em>inimising psychological concerns and possible side effects of treatment are fundamental to best practice for all people with Crohn's disease, whatever their age</em>’, which could include access to psychological support, if appropriate. The guideline also recommends that clinicians give patients with Crohn’s disease contact details for relevant support groups.
