star this property answer text <p>The adjuvanted trivalent influenza vaccine was not available for use in 2017/18.</p><p> </p><p>General practitioners (GPs) and pharmacies are responsible for ordering and purchasing flu vaccines for the adult seasonal flu programme (eligible individuals aged 18 years and over) directly from manufacturers.</p><p> </p><p>Information on what vaccines are being ordered by these independent contractors is not routinely collected. Information on vaccines used by pharmacies and GPs will be available after the end of a flu season when practice/pharmacies claim reimbursement for the cost of the vaccines they have used.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>Public Health England has updated their advice in the Green Book chapter on influenza so that clinicians are aware of the advice of the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation in relation to the adjuvanted trivalent influenza vaccine.</p><p> </p><p>In addition, NHS England wrote to general practitioners and clinical commissioning groups (via NHS England local teams) in December 2017 to provide an update on the use of the adjuvanted trivalent influenza vaccine for 2018/19.</p><p> </p><p>This update will also be made available to community pharmacies as part of confirming that the Advanced Influenza Vaccination service has been recommissioned in early 2018. Community pharmacies are able to order relevant vaccines as detailed in the service specification, including the enhanced vaccine for patients within the relevant cohort.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>Public Health England (PHE) provides flu vaccines centrally for the children’s flu programme in which eligible children are offered either the nasal spray Fluenz Tetra or an inactivated flu vaccine for those children for whom Fluenz Tetra is unsuitable. Centrally purchased flu vaccines are carefully monitored by PHE to ensure there is equitable distribution across England and sufficient in-date vaccines for patients who present throughout the season.</p><p> </p><p>General practitioners and other providers are directly responsible for the flu supplies used to deliver the national flu programme to the other eligible groups. star this property answer text <p>Public Health England, in partnership with NHS England, is currently running the Stay Well This Winter campaign which encourages people who are most at-risk of preventable emergency admission to hospital to take actions to help them stay well. These actions include getting a flu vaccination and visiting a pharmacy at the first sign of a winter illness.</p><p> </p><p>The campaign launched on 9 October 2017 and promotes uptake of the flu vaccination to people with long term health conditions, people aged 65 years and over, pregnant women, carers and eligible children.</p><p> </p><p>Stay Well This Winter is a national multi-channel campaign that includes television, radio, social media, public relations and digital activity. This is supported by an extensive partnership programme to amplify reach through local authorities, the National Health Service, pharmacies, commercial manufacturers of over the counter medicines, the energy sector, charities, employers and many other organisations.</p>

star this property answer text <p>Encouraging take-up of the flu vaccination in people with chronic respiratory disease is primarily a matter for Public Health England (PHE). PHE, in partnership with NHS England, is currently running the national multi-channel campaign ‘Stay Well This Winter’, which encourages people who are most at-risk of preventable emergency admission to hospital to take actions to help them stay well, such as getting a flu vaccination and visiting a pharmacy at the first sign of a winter illness.</p><p> </p><p>Television adverts encourage people with long-term health conditions including breathlessness and lung disease to get the flu vaccine. The radio and social media advertising specifically target people with chronic lung diseases, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, emphysema, bronchitis and asthma. PHE also works with the British Lung Foundation and Asthma UK to help promote flu vaccine take-up to their supporters.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>Public Health England (PHE) is responsible for monitoring public health vaccination programmes, including the influenza vaccine programme. It particularly monitors vaccine uptake, effectiveness and safety.</p><p> </p><p>Hospital admissions in persons with chronic respiratory disease are due to a wide range of causes, one of which can be flu. No study has been undertaken on the potential relationship between uptake of the flu vaccine in people with chronic respiratory disease and hospital admissions for people with chronic respiratory disease. However, PHE flu vaccine uptake monitoring has shown that the group 16-65 years of age with chronic respiratory disease had an uptake of 49.1% in 2016/17. There was an estimated flu vaccine effectiveness of 40.6% in this age-group against laboratory confirmed influenza, which would include individuals with chronic respiratory disease.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>Croup can be caused by a range of respiratory viruses; the flu vaccine can help protect against croup which develops as a consequence of the influenza virus. The flu vaccine can only reduce croup caused by influenza.</p><p> </p><p>The National Health Service annual influenza vaccination programme delivers vaccine to healthy children. For 2017, those aged two to three years of age, those in reception class, and school years one to four are all eligible. To encourage and improve uptake, the flu vaccine for those in reception class and school years one to four are delivered in the school setting. The programmes aims to help protect young children and to reduce the wider spread of flu in households and communities.</p> more like this
