star this property answer text <p>Pulmonary rehabilitation is one of the most effective treatments for chronic lung disease. Respiratory care is one of the areas being considered as part of the National Health Service long-term plan currently in development and new guidelines from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence are due to be published in December.</p><p> </p><p>The Department supports the NHS to increase access to pulmonary rehabilitation and improve the quality of care for people with long-term respiratory conditions through the following actions:</p><p> </p><p>- a national roll out of the RightCare programme by NHS England which directs clinical commissioning groups to offer pulmonary rehabilitation as part of an optimal pathway for COPD patients;</p><p>- the COPD best practice tariff encourages NHS providers to refer patients for pulmonary rehabilitation as a financial incentive;</p><p>- a pulmonary rehabilitation service accreditation programme run by the Royal College of Physicians.</p> more like this

They were:</p><p> </p><p>- ‘Electronic cigarettes for smoking cessation: a randomised controlled trial’ by Bullen and others.</p><p> </p><p>- ‘Real‐world effectiveness of e‐cigarettes when used to aid smoking cessation: a cross‐sectional population study’ by Brown and others.</p><p> </p><p>PHE’s recommendation is also supported by evidence from local stop smoking services in England, where people using e-cigarettes and stop smoking medicines consecutively have the highest rates of success, with 75% quitting successfully compared to 50% for those using medicines alone.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>Subject to Parliamentary approval, from 1 November doctors on the General Medical Council’s specialist register can make the decision to prescribe cannabis-based products for medicinal use where deemed clinically appropriate and in the best interests of patients. Prescribers will need to follow local governance procedures for prescribing unlicensed medicines.</p><p> </p><p>The regulations do not limit the types of conditions that can be considered for treatment and will only be able to be supplied under the prescription or direction of a specialist doctor.</p><p> </p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>In 2018/19, the National Cancer Programme established the National Support Fund for Cancer Alliances. The purpose of the National Support Fund is to address geographical variation in the transformation funding bids submitted by Cancer Alliances in 2017/18. The Fund is being used by Cancer Alliances to:</p><p>- improve, and sustain, performance against the 62-day cancer waiting-time standard; and</p><p>- underpin delivery of the relevant 2018/19 Planning Guidance priorities in a consistent way across the country.</p><p> </p><p>Alongside this, NHS England is providing an additional £10 million this financial year to improve and reduce variation in operational performance. This work will focus on:</p><p>- a nationwide initiative (particularly focused on urology) to grow capacity and support improvement activity across the county; and</p><p>- engaging with especially challenged areas to diagnose the root causes of their poor performance and to implement actions enabling the better management of additional patient demand.</p>
