As in 2014-15 and 2015-16, student numbers and associated costs were lower than these estimates in 2016-17 which resulted in a lower spend of £106m. This represents 1.8% of the budget that was available for reallocation. All 16 to 19 providers, including Sixth Form Colleges, have a vital role to play in making sure young people have the skills they need to get on in life, and we are currently considering the efficiency and resilience of the further education sector, and assessing how far existing funding and regulatory structures meet the costs of delivering quality further education.</p><p> </p><p>We have protected the base rate of funding for 16 to 19 year olds for all types of providers until 2020 and our commitment to the 16 to 19 sector has contributed to the current record high proportion of 16 and 17 year olds who are participating in education or apprenticeships. As with other areas of departmental spending, sixth form funding from 2020 onwards will be considered as part of the next Spending Review.</p><p>We have protected the base rate of funding for 16 to 19 year olds for all types of providers until the end of the current spending review period in 2020 and overall, the government plans to invest nearly £7 billion during 2018-19, to ensure there is a place in education or training for every 16 to 19 year old who wants one.
