The NHS is also meeting the 62-day cancer waiting time standard for breast and skin cancers, which account for more than a third of referrals reported against this standard.</p><p> </p><p>Achieving the 62-day standard is a key objective in the Government’s Mandate to NHS England for 2016-17. NHS England and NHS Improvement are providing support and challenge to those trusts that need to improve their performance against the standard.</p><p> </p><p>Diagnostic waiting times are a key contributor to the 62-day standard. NHS England is making progress towards introducing a 28 days faster diagnosis standard for cancer patients. The current phase of the campaign focuses on the barriers to seeking advice, such as fear or anxiety, rather than on specific set symptoms. Previous phases of the campaign have included symptoms which could be indicative of sarcoma, such as abdominal discomfort or a persistent cough.</p><p>NHS England and NHS Improvement are committed to improving the completeness of staging data. The purpose of the National Support Fund is to address geographical variation in the transformation funding bids submitted by Cancer Alliances in 2017/18. The Fund is being used by Cancer Alliances to:</p><p>- improve, and sustain, performance against the 62-day cancer waiting-time standard; and</p><p>- underpin delivery of the relevant 2018/19 Planning Guidance priorities in a consistent way across the country.</p><p> </p><p>Alongside this, NHS England is providing an additional £10 million this financial year to improve and reduce variation in operational performance. If successful a trust will receive a payment that will have a direct benefit to their bottom line financial position. This funding must not be used for any other purpose.</p><p> </p><p>Whatever the financial position in a trust, continued delivery of affordable, safe and quality health services is paramount. To ensure this happens, regulators will intervene to provide the necessary support and challenge to bring the organisation back to a stable position as soon as possible. Where necessary, interim financing (cash support) may be provided to those trusts to help pay the bills.</p><p> </p><p>In December 2016 NHS England announced that a £200 million fund will be available to Cancer Alliances and the national cancer vanguard over the next two years to specifically support the areas the Cancer Taskforce’s strategy estimated would need additional investment, including supporting earlier diagnosis and the full roll out of the Recovery Package.</p><p> </p><p>NHS England received bids from all alliances on 18 January 2017. The bids have been assessed by a national panel on the basis of a pre-determined set of criteria, reflecting the value they offer and the panel’s confidence of delivery.
