An expert advisory group has been appointed to advise the Government on this matter.</p><p>Ian Bauckham, the Review Chair, has held early discussions with ITT network Chairs and others, and he and officials will be undertaking wider sector engagement in late Spring. The standard student finance offer is available to both undergraduate and postgraduate non-salaried trainee teachers, regardless of whether or not they are also eligible for an ITT bursary.</p><p>The student finance offer for these trainee teachers includes a means-tested maintenance loan to support their living costs. Additional grant funding is also available to those who have children, adult dependents or a disability. In doing this, we take account of a number of factors including historic recruitment, forecast economic conditions, and teacher supply need in each subject. Being able to change bursary amounts gives us the flexibility to respond to the need to attract new teachers and means the Department is spending money where it is needed most.</p><p>Final recruitment figures for the 2020/21 academic year are not yet available. Between February and September this year there has been a 32% increase in applications for those looking to enter the classroom compared to the equivalent period last year. Information about this is available here: <a href="https://www.ucas.com/data-and-analysis/ucas-teacher-training-statistical-releases" target="_blank">https://www.ucas.com/data-and-analysis/ucas-teacher-training-statistical-releases</a>.</p><p>Teaching remains an attractive proposition for graduates. The focus of the bursaries the Department is offering for the 2021/22 academic year will be on subjects where we expect it will be hardest to attract sufficient applicants. All trainee teachers on tuition fee funded ITT routes can apply for a tuition fee loan so they do not have to pay the fee upfront, and they can also apply for a maintenance loan to support their living costs. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 26/01/2022 answer text <p>All teachers are teachers of special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), and the department is committed to ensuring that all children and young people, particularly those with SEND receive high quality teaching that will enable them to reach their full potential at school.</p><p>That is why the revised Initial Teacher Training (ITT) Core Content Framework (CCF), that all new entrants to the profession benefit from, has been designed around how to support all pupils to succeed, including those pupils identified within the four areas of need set out in the SEND code of practice.</p><p>When developing the framework, there were a range of views from stakeholders and SEND experts about things that could or should be included in the framework. However, there was consensus that our approach of ‘quality-first teaching’, would be the best way to improve outcomes for all children, particularly those with special educational needs. The framework, therefore, deliberately does not detail approaches specific to particular additional needs, such as autism, but what makes the most effective teaching.</p><p>In addition to the mandated minimum set out in the ITT CCF, we expect ITT providers and their partners to continue to tailor their curricula to the needs of their trainees and the children in the schools where they train and will work. However, ITT courses must be designed so that trainee teachers can demonstrate that they meet the Teachers’ Standards at the appropriate level. This includes the requirement in Standard 5, that all teachers must have a clear understanding of the needs of all pupils, including those with special educational needs.</p><p>Within the new autism strategy, published in July 2021 and extended to children and young people for the first time, we set out how we will continue our programme of developing training and resources for education staff. We also committed to working in collaboration across government, with autistic people and their families, the NHS, local government, and the voluntary sector, to implement the strategy, and we are continuing to do so.</p><p>£600,000 of the strategy’s first year of funding has gone towards the department’s contract with the Autism Education Trust (AET) for the 2021/22 academic year. The department has funded the AET since 2011 to deliver autism awareness training to education staff in early years, schools, and further education settings. It has so far reached more than 305,000 people across the country. This includes not only teachers and teaching assistants, but also support staff such as receptionists, dining hall staff and caretakers, encouraging a 'whole school' approach to supporting autistic pupils.</p><p>The department has also provided £2 million of funding for the Whole School SEND consortium in 2021/22, through our contract with nasen. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 22/06/2023 answer text <p>All teachers are teachers of Special Education Needs and Disabilities (SEND), and high quality teaching is central to ensuring that pupils with SEND are given the best possible opportunity to achieve at school.</p><p>There are already a number of measures in place to support teachers in identifying and implementing support for pupils who face difficulties, including working with a dedicated SEND coordinator.</p><p>From September 2020, all new teachers have benefited from at least three years of evidence based professional development and support, starting with Initial Teacher Training (ITT) based on the new ITT Core Content Framework (CCF), and followed by a new two-year induction, underpinned by the Early Career Framework (ECF). The Department is reviewing the ITT CCF and ECF this year. This includes working with experts to identify opportunities to improve how the frameworks can support new teachers to be more confident in meeting the needs of pupils with SEND.</p><p>In addition, all ITT courses must be designed so that trainee teachers can demonstrate that they meet the Teachers’ Standards at the appropriate level. High quality teaching is the single most important in-school factor in improving outcomes for all pupils, including those with autism.</p><p>Training and development to support pupils with autism starts at the beginning of a teacher’s training through their Initial Teacher Training (ITT) course, which is then embedded through the Early Career Framework (ECF). Careful consideration has been given to the needs of trainee teachers in relation to supporting pupils with SEND, and the ECF builds on that training for early career teachers.</p><p>Once teachers qualify and are employed in schools, head teachers also use their professional judgement to identify any further training, including specific specialisms, for individual staff that is relevant to them, the school, and its pupils, for example, through the Universal Services Programme.</p><p>The programme offers online training, professional development groups, bespoke school and college improvement projects, sector led research, autism awareness training and a focus on preparation for adulthood, including employer led webinars. The programme commenced in May 2022 and will run until Spring 2025.</p><p>So far, 6,500 school and college staff have accessed free online training modules, and 81 schools and over 135 colleges have identified and led their own SEND focused school improvement project.
