The latest data published by UCAS on 25 September 2014 in its ‘UCAS Teacher Training statistical releases’[1], indicates that there will be an increase in computing trainees commencing initial teacher training (ITT) this year, although this will not be certain until the 2014/15 ITT census is published.</p><p>For computing trainees starting their training in 2015/16, we have increased bursaries to up to £25,000 tax-free. We are also funding a prestigious scholarship scheme for computing trainees worth £25,000 tax-free and offering a range of professional benefits. Additional funding has also been made available to schools offering School Direct (salaried) places in computing to boost starting salaries; computing trainees will be able to earn over £21,000 nationally and £25,000 in inner London.</p><p>There are a range of other incentives in place to attract high quality computing trainees into the teaching profession, including:</p><ol><li>The delivery of a targeted marketing campaign to encourage high-quality computing graduates and potential career changers to consider a career in teaching.</li><li>The offering of tailored support for graduates and career changers interested in teaching computing, including access to a School Experience Programme.</li><li>Funding of computing subject knowledge enhancement (SKE) programmes, which prepare applicants for teacher training by building up or refreshing their existing knowledge. 31% of computing applicants who accepted an ITT place for 2013/14 accessed a SKE course.</li></ol><p>[1] <a href="http://www.ucas.com/data-analysis/ucas-teacher-training-statistical-releases" target="_blank">www.ucas.com/data-analysis/ucas-teacher-training-statistical-releases</a></p> answering member constituency Yeovil answering member printed Mr David Laws question first answered 24/10/2014 10:10:23 answering member 1473 label Biography information for Mr David Laws

There are currently 691 designated teaching schools working with over 500 school partnerships (‘alliances’) across England. The latest statistics were published in June 2017 in the ‘School Workforce in England: November 2016’ statistical release: <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/school-workforce-in-england-november-2016" target="_blank">https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/school-workforce-in-england-november-2016</a>.</p><p> </p><p>Table 7b shows the time series, from 2011 to 2016, of the full-time equivalent number of teacher entrants and the full-time equivalent number of teachers leaving.</p><p> </p><p>The statistics show that between November 2015 and November 2016, 43,830 full-time equivalent qualified teachers entered our classrooms (this includes newly qualified teachers, qualified teachers returning to the profession after a career break and experienced qualified teachers working in state funded schools for the first time). This represents a teacher entrant rate of 10.1%.</p><p> </p><p>During the same period, 42,830 full-time equivalent qualified teachers left state funded schools (this includes those retiring, those leaving the profession early and those taking a career break and who may come back at a later date). 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 19/10/2017 answer text <p>The number of teachers is at an all-time high: there are now 457,300 full time equivalent teachers, up 15,500 from 2010. The number of new teachers entering our classrooms continues to outnumber those who retire or leave, and the number of teachers returning to the profession is 8% higher than in 2011.</p><p> </p><p>We are continuing to offer generous bursaries to recruit the best graduates into the profession. From 2018 we are increasing funding across all high priority subjects. Our prestigious scholarship scheme will also continue, offering a package of tailored support and up to £28,000 tax-free for scholars in six subjects. We are also introducing a new style bursary for maths teachers with early retention payments.</p><p> </p><p>In addition, teachers will benefit from the newly announced rise in the student loan repayment threshold and we will be piloting a new student loan reimbursement programme for science and Modern Foreign Language (MFL) teachers in the early years of their career, targeted in the areas of the country that need them most.
