The UK condemns the use of cruel, inhuman or degrading punishment in all circumstances. We have raised Mr Badawi’s case at a senior level with the Saudi authorities. The UK is a strong supporter of freedom of expression around the world. It currently states that cases of bird flu in Egypt are mostly in rural areas, that the risk to humans from Avian Influenza is believed to be very low, that live animal markets, poultry farms and other close contact with domestic, caged or wild birds should be avoided, and that poultry and egg dishes should be thoroughly cooked. The Government remains longstanding and strong supporters of these groups. We are providing non-lethal support, as well as strong political backing for the National Coalition – most recently when President Hadi al-Bahra visited London from 10th-12th November. We also plan to make a significant contribution to the US Department of Defence training programme for the Syrian groups.
