star this property answer text <p>The Government recognises the importance of expanding the National Health Service workforce, particularly in parts of the country which are understaffed, including rural areas. The NHS Long Term Workforce Plan (LTWP) commits to doubling the number of medical school places, with new medical schools and additional places in geographical areas with the greatest staff shortfalls. Further medical expansion will build on the impact of five new medical schools that have already opened in historically hard-to-recruit rural and coastal locations in Tyne and Wear, West Lancashire, Essex, Lincolnshire, and Kent.</p><p>The LTWP also sets out an aim to further adjust the distribution of postgraduate specialty training places, so that more medical students carry out their postgraduate training in parts of the country with the greatest shortages. Doctors are more likely to settle and practice in the areas they train. Therefore, expansion of places will help to address the need for more staff in these areas.</p>

star this property answer text <p>NHS England publishes vacancy statistics for England on a quarterly basis. These present the difference between funded establishment posts and those filled by substantive staff. They do not indicate where vacancies are currently filled with temporary staffing and therefore do not equate to unfilled shifts.</p><p>The statistics are published at a national and a regional level. The data does not allow a differentiation between West and East Midlands. Data is also not available by city; however, NHS England has published trust level vacancy rates for March 2023.</p><p>The latest statistics show that as of June 2023, there are 125,572 full time equivalent (FTE) vacancies across National Health Service trusts in England, representing a rate of 8.9%. For NHS trusts in the Midlands, there are 23,639 FTE vacancies, also representing a rate of 8.9%. As of March 2023, the vacancy rate for University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust, was 6.3%.</p><p>The NHS published the Long Term Workforce Plan in June this year, backed by over £2.4 billion over the next five years to fund additional education and training places. The Long Term Workforce Plan will double medical school training places to 15,000 by 2031, increase the number of general practitioner training places by 50% to 6,000 by 2031 and almost double the number of adult nurse training places by 2031, with around 58,000 nurse and midwife training places a year by 2031/32.</p>

star this property answer text <p>We continue to grow the National Health Service workforce. As of December, there were over 4,900 (3.8%) more doctors and almost 11,100 (3.6%) more nurses than the same time last year. We are on track to deliver 50,000 more nurses across the NHS by 2024 and have over 38,000 more nurses in December 2022 compared with September 2019. The Government has funded 1,500 more medical school places each year for domestic students in England, a 25% increase, taking the total number to 7,500 each year.</p><p>We are also expanding routes into professional roles in the NHS, particularly apprenticeships. Apprenticeships allow people to earn as they learn, benefiting those for whom a full-time university course is not practical or preferred. There were around 20,900 new NHS apprenticeships starts in 2021/22, making NHS the largest employer of apprentices in the public sector by number of starts. There has also been funding confirmed as part of a pilot scheme for up to 200 Medical Doctor Degree Apprentices.</p><p>All eligible nursing, midwifery and allied health profession degree students have received a non-repayable training grant of a minimum of £5,000 per academic year. Additional funding is also available for studying certain courses for example, Mental Health Nursing and Learning Disabilities Nursing with further financial support available to students for childcare, dual accommodation costs and travel.</p><p>We have commissioned NHS England to develop a long term workforce plan for the NHS workforce for the next 15 years. This Plan is due to be published shortly.</p><p>To boost capacity, on 30 January we published the delivery plan for recovering urgent and emergency care services and committed to increase capacity, including with 5,000 new beds as part of the permanent bed base for next winter. This is backed by £1 billion of dedicated funding, building on the £500 million used over this winter to support local areas to increase their overall capacity and support their staff.</p>

star this property answer text <p>The vacancy rate for all staff in National Health Service provider trusts had increased from 7.6% in June 2021 to 9.7% in June 2022. The number of vacancies is the difference between the number of full-time equivalent (FTE) permanent or fixed-term staff in post and planned workforce levels. Whilst in the period June 2021 to June 2022 the number of FTE staff working in NHS provider trusts had increased by 27,991, 2.4%, trust planned workforce levels had increased more quickly.</p><p>Every April NHS providers reassess their staffing requirements, often leading to increases in planned workforce levels in response to anticipated activity, such as increased elective activity, or to make additional provisions to deal with ad-hoc capacity peaks. For many trusts, this process was disrupted during the COVID-19 pandemic. Hence, increases in vacancy rates between June 2021 and June 2022, will have been more significant, in part, due the removal of the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and as such it is more appropriate to compare current levels to the pre-pandemic level of vacancies, which in June 2019 was 9.2%.</p>

star this property answer text <p>We aim to deliver an additional 50,000 nurses by the end of March 2024, with over 29,000 more nurses currently working in the National Health Service compared with September 2019. We have also funded an additional 1,500 undergraduate medical school places each year for domestic students in England and delivered five new medical schools. The Department has commissioned NHS England to develop a long-term workforce plan. The plan will consider the number of staff and the roles required and will set out the actions and reforms needed to improve workforce supply and retention.</p><p>The national health and wellbeing offer continues to be available to all NHS staff, which includes a confidential text support service, free access to a range of wellbeing apps and support for line managers in having safe and effective wellbeing conversations. In 2022/23, we have invested more than £45 million to support the continuation the health and wellbeing support offer. This includes 40 mental health hubs providing outreach and assessment services for frontline staff, Professional Nurse Advocates and expanding the NHS Practitioner Health service. The NHS Retention Programme aims to understand why staff are leaving, resulting in targeted interventions to support staff to stay whilst keeping them well.</p>
