The Department has recently announced a number of activities to improve the safety, and perception of safety, of cycling and walking: tailored cycle training for driving instructors, support for police in tackling unsafe “close passing”, an update to the National Standard for Cycle Training and, most recently, a review of the Highway Code to include overtaking and opening vehicle doors. In 2007, in Great Britain, there were 9,829 reported road accidents involving personal injury and at least one HGV, which has decreased by 51% to 4,789 road accidents in 2017.</p><p>Road safety remains a priority for the Department. For example, the Cycling and Walking Investment Strategy: Safety Review, published in November 2018, set out a number of actions designed to reduce risks from HGVs. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 17/04/2023 answer text <p>The Department’s reported road casualty statistics are based on data collected via the STATS19 system of injury collisions reported by the police.</p><p>In 2021, the latest year for which data is available, there were a total of 1,593 reported injury collisions on rural roads in Great Britain which involved at least one heavy goods vehicle.
