There is a presumption against their closure. This does not mean that they can never close, but if they do, any replacement provision must be of equal quality, preserve expertise and be more accessible and convenient for parents.</p><p>Whether or not a MNS closes is a matter for local authorities, but the presumption against their closure includes a duty on local authorities to assess whether the alternative provision available is of equal or greater quality. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 06/06/2019 answer text <p>Local authorities are responsible for assessing supply and demand for childcare and ensuring that there are sufficient places available for working parents locally.</p><p> </p><p>Whether a maintained nursery school (MNS) closes or not is a matter for local authorities, but they should have regard to statutory guidance when deciding to close one, which includes consultation with all those who have an interest. The department is in regular contact with local authorities and the MNS sector.</p><p> </p><p>I announced on 28 February that the government would extend the supplementary funding paid to local authorities, by approximately £24 million. This enables them to fully fund MNSs for the whole of the 2019/20 academic year. Core spending power has increased from £45.1 billion in 2018-19 to £46.4 billion in 2019-20. For Sunderland, this means an increase in core spending power of £235 million in 2018-19 to £239 million in 2019-20.</p><p>In addition to this, the Autumn Budget announced a further £410 million in 2019-20 for local authorities to invest in adult and children’s social care services.</p><p>The Department for Education (DfE) made an investment of £2.4 million towards the creation of Together for Children (TfC), the company responsible for delivering children’s services in Sunderland, which has started to make an impact on improving children’s services. Each hub will receive up to £261,044 in 2018/19. Additional funding of approximately £49,000 in 2018/19 covers hub school induction events and English Hubs Council engagement for all hubs. Each hub will engage with up to 85 schools this year, a total of 2,720 schools.
