unstar this property answer text
I have discussed important cross-cutting areas of employment practices and pensions with Ministerial colleagues including the Minister for Small Business, Consumers and Corporate Responsibility. In addition, my officials have been working closely with the Department for Business Energy and Industrial Strategy officials, in connection with both the Taylor Review of modern working practices and the DWP Review of automatic enrolment.

Automatic enrolment duties apply to those who act as an employer of any eligible job holder(s) under the rules set out in the Pensions Act 2008. For example, a supply teacher working through, and being paid by, an agency will have the right to be automatically enrolled into a workplace pension through that agency if they meet the age and earnings eligibility criteria.

Since the roll out of automatic enrolment began in 2012, over 8.7 million people have been enrolled into a workplace pension scheme. By the time roll out is complete, we estimate that around 10 million people will be newly saving or saving more and an additional £17bn per year of pension savings will be generated by 2019/20. This policy has been fundamental in improving pension outcomes for eligible jobholders.

Thanks to triple lock, in April 2017, the basic state pension was over £1200 a year higher than it was in April 2010. The government is committed to the triple lock for the remainder of this parliament. The basic state pension it is now at one of its highest rates relative to earnings for over two decades, reversing a trend of decline we saw between 1997 and 2010.

Recent reforms to private pensions including the introduction of Automatic Enrolment are also helping to improve retirement outcomes for future generations.

It was always intended as a stepping stone into mainstream banking, and financial inclusion, while customers got used to elements of banking.

There are now fewer barriers to prevent people, who do not have an existing account, from accessing and using one. Importantly as most bank accounts can be accessed at the post office it doesn’t need to change how or where they collect their money.

Additionally, POca is expensive to administer and as we deal with public funds we have a duty to use the most cost-effective method for issuing customer payments - which is into a bank, building society or credit union account.
more like this
