star this property answer text <p>The government is committed to supporting the maritime industry and ensuring high quality training and employment is available for UK seafarers.</p><p>We do not intend to set an annual target for the number of UK seafarers. Our work to improve seafarer welfare and the training offer for UK ratings and officers, is the most effective way to attract and retain UK seafarers. This includes the Seafarer Wages Act 2023, our 9 Point-Plan for seafarers, as well as our Ratings and Cadet Reviews.</p> more like this

In July 2022, we published a report on seafarer suicide to support this work. This is in addition to our Nine-Point Plan for Seafarers, which will improve seafarer employment protections and welfare.</p><p> </p> more like this

The Route Map has a dedicated section on People and Skills and sets out progress on the Seafarer Protections Nine-Point Plan. star this property answer text <p>The Government has ensured the UK has remained open for seafarers of all nationalities throughout and post pandemic – whether that’s to take shore leave, receive vaccines, or be repatriated. The UK is proud that it has treated all seafarers properly in line with established international conventions. The government remains committed to the welfare of seafarers, and work continues to strengthen legislation in this area.</p><p><strong> </strong></p><p>Key workers provide essential services which keep the country functioning. Seafarers are regarded as key workers due to the critical work they carry out to keep our maritime trading routes open. Whilst COVID related restrictions in the UK ended in April 2022, seafarers retain key worker status.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>We remain committed to maximising the employment of UK seafarers. That is why we support a proportion of the cost of seafarer training though our £30m Support for Maritime Training fund. A range of maritime apprenticeships are also available.</p><p>Maritime 2050’s workforce vision focused on good maritime welfare. We are working to improve and reform seafarer employment protections and welfare, ensuring they are paid and treated fairly, irrespective of flag or nationality.</p><p>On 30 March, the Secretary of State for Transport announced his intention to change the law so that seafarers working on vessels that regularly use UK ports are paid at least the equivalent to national minimum wage, irrespective of the nationality of the seafarer or flag of the vessel.</p> more like this
