star this property answer text <p>We work closely with international partners including the International Labour Organisation, industry, and unions to monitor seafarer welfare standards through ongoing dialogue, and to collaborate in enhancing seafarer welfare standards. In July 2022, we published a report on seafarer suicide to support this work. star this property answer text <p>We remain committed to maximising the employment of UK seafarers. That is why we support a proportion of the cost of seafarer training though our £30m Support for Maritime Training fund. A range of maritime apprenticeships are also available.</p><p>Maritime 2050’s workforce vision focused on good maritime welfare. We are working to improve and reform seafarer employment protections and welfare, ensuring they are paid and treated fairly, irrespective of flag or nationality.</p><p>On 30 March, the Secretary of State for Transport announced his intention to change the law so that seafarers working on vessels that regularly use UK ports are paid at least the equivalent to national minimum wage, irrespective of the nationality of the seafarer or flag of the vessel.</p> more like this

The aspiration is to provide clarity on the standards of welfare expected for our maritime workforce, regardless of whether they are working on land or at sea. This could include a review of all employment legislation explicitly pertaining to seafarers’ work and social protection, ensuring close alignment with the protections available to those working in land-based roles.</p><p> </p><p>As a coastal and flag State, international law generally restricts the UK applying its domestic legislation to vessels operating outside its territorial waters and not registered in the UK.</p> more like this
