	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 19/12/2018 answer text <p>This analysis is a welcome initiative by the OECD to improve the international comparability of productivity statistics. It was initiated in response to a request from the ONS to examine how different countries go about measuring total hours worked (which are required to calculate output per hour worked).</p><p> </p><p>When calculating labour productivity there is a trade-off between using the best available data sourced from different countries’ national accounts, or data compiled on the most consistent basis. The OECD research finds that while for many countries this choice makes a minor difference, for the UK it has a larger effect and improves our performance relative to other countries.</p><p> </p><p>The ONS is examining how best to incorporate these findings into their international comparisons of labour productivity and plans to publish an article on this in January 2019; including more detailed breakdowns of how the UK compares with other developed countries on a more consistent basis.</p> answering member printed Lord Henley question first answered 19/12/2018 12:53:54 answering member 2616 label Biography information for Lord Henley

We have provided a framework to build on the strengths of different places and address the factors that hold others back. This will include investing in key infrastructure projects, increasing skill levels, and backing local innovation strengths.</p><p>The Industrial Strategy will build on the £12 billion Local Growth Fund (2015-16 to 2020-21) for local areas; 8 Devolution Deals; and 48 Enterprise Zones that will unlock £2.7 billion of private sector investment. Productivity in the services sector grew by 0.2% over the same period. A similar pattern was observed in 2018 Q4, with services productivity outperforming manufacturing; growing by 0.4% compared to a fall of -1.1% for the latter.</p><p>In terms of international comparisons, based on OECD data, all G7 countries excluding the US (for which data are not yet available) experienced a slowdown in productivity growth in 2018. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 15/11/2017 answer text <p>The earliest adopters of new technologies can gain a first-mover advantage, allowing them to reap rewards in terms of additional jobs and increased revenue.</p><p>Artificial intelligence and machine learning are distinct technologies. ‘AI’ describes where computers are able to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence, such as visual perception, decision-making and translation between languages; ‘machine learning’ comprises deeper learning where computers are able o learn without external programming, building on algorithms that can make predictions using data. However, for the purposes of identifying support for and development in the sector, it is useful to treat them as a group.</p><p>Government welcomes the independent review of Artificial Intelligence, “Growing the Artificial Intelligence Industry in the UK”, published on 15 October. This has been exacerbated in recent years by weak productivity growth, commonly referred to as the ‘productivity puzzle’.</p><p>The slowdown in UK productivity growth in the last decade can largely be attributed to changes in the finance and manufacturing sectors which saw an outsized fall in their productivity growth. Economic shocks and pressures arising from the Financial Crisis and the Euro Area crisis also had a dampening effect on productivity.</p><p>Productivity is the main driver of long-run economic growth. The UK’s ability to improve living standards is almost entirely dependent on its ability to raise productivity. In 2017 the Government published a document on the Industrial Strategy that set out a long-term plan to boost productivity by backing businesses to create good jobs and increase the earning power of people throughout the UK with investment in skills, industries and infrastructure. The Government recently published the Business Productivity Review in response to the Industrial Strategy’s core priority of addressing the UK’s productivity issue.</p><p>Furthermore, the Industrial Strategy Council – an independent, non-statutory advisory group comprised of leading men and women from business, academia and civil society – was created to provide impartial and unbiased evaluation of the Government’s progress in delivering the Industrial Strategy.
