star this property answer text <p>Government takes train punctuality seriously and understands it is crucial to passengers and freight users. That is why Government agreed a Network Rail settlement for England and Wales of £47.9bn for Control Period 6 specifically aimed at maintaining and renewing the railway to improve reliability and punctuality for all rail users. We recognise performance on the railway has been unsatisfactory, and passengers have not always received the level of service they expected. While performance has improved recently, the new Transport Secretary understands passengers need the certainty of reliable journeys, and is determined to work with industry to improve performance. We continue to monitor the performance of our franchised operators closely to press for improvements for passengers.</p> more like this

While performance has improved recently, the new Transport Secretary understands passengers need the certainty of reliable journeys, and is determined to work with industry to improve performance.</p><p> </p><p>Official statistics on passenger rail reliability and performance are published by the Office of Rail and Road (ORR).</p><p> </p><p>Cancellations and Significant Lateness (CaSL) measures the proportion of trains arriving at the final destination more than 30 minutes after the planned timetable or is cancelled either in full or in part.</p><p> </p><p>The Public Performance Measure (PPM) is defined as the percentage of trains arriving at the final destination within five minutes of the planned timetable for London and South East, Regional and Scotland operators, or within ten minutes for the Long Distance operators.</p><p> </p><p>Both PPM and CaSL measures reflect punctuality and reliability at the final destination, rather than at each station stop. star this property answer text <p>The type of role that railways play, for example the relative mix of local and commuter demand versus regional and longer distance travel, varies from country to country. The UK has one of the most intensively utilised rail networks in Europe, with many commuter services and over 4,000 extra services per week having been added over the past couple of years. The UK rail system has some of the highest passenger satisfaction levels in Europe, and the recent Transport Focus National Rail Passenger Survey Spring 2019 reported that the biggest single factor impacting on passenger satisfaction was punctuality, at a 36% contribution, whilst ‘journey length’ only made a 7% contribution. Furthermore, to the limited extent that journey length is considered important, 84% of passengers surveyed were satisfied with ‘the length of time the journey was scheduled to take (speed)’, the third highest satisfaction level out of the 40 different aspects of a rail journey assessed.</p><p> </p><p>Once construction of HS2 has been completed trains would be capable of operations up to 360km/h, however HS2 is about much more than just speed, it brings enhanced capacity, in particular released capacity on the existing rail network connectivity and wider economic benefits.</p><p> </p>

star this property answer text <p>The latest National Rail Passenger Survey (NRPS) results (Autumn 2018) found that 8 in 10 journeys were rated as satisfactory overall at the national level, with fewer than one in 10 rated as unsatisfactory. Satisfaction as measured by the NRPS has generally remained stable over the last 10 years.</p><p> </p><p>The fieldwork for the Autumn 2018 NRPS was the first since the introduction of the new timetable in May 2018 and the subsequent period of network disruption, which is likely to have had an impact on the results for some Train Operating Companies (TOCs).</p><p> </p><p>In addition, a number of TOCs were affected by industrial action throughout 2018, including South Western Railway and Northern. Parts of the country (particularly Scotland) were affected by Storm Ali during September and October which closed a large number of stations in Scotland.</p> more like this
