However, political parties are responsible for their candidate selection and should lead the way in improving diverse representation. I welcome the many efforts already ongoing from political parties to do so.</p><p> </p><p>We are developing work programmes to encourage more women to participate in politics and to ensure disabled candidates have the right support so that all people can have a voice in the decisions that affect them.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>The Equality Act 2010 requires service providers and employers, including public authorities, to make reasonable adjustments to ensure that disabled people are not put at a substantial disadvantage, including in questions of access. For service providers this is an anticipatory duty, which means that they should not wait until they are asked to make an adjustment. However, the duty does not require publication of information about any adjustments made or the general accessibility features of a building, such as those required by building regulations.</p><p> </p><p>The Government agrees that the public sector can play an important leadership role in providing accessibility information for building users, whether they are visitors or employees. However, the Government believes that such decisions are best made at a local level and has no plans to introduce a requirement for such information to be published.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>The Government does not currently collect data on differences in pay for LGBT vs non-LGBT staff. There is likely to be variation in the extent to which organisations collect this information about their staff. As part of the LGBT Action Plan, the Government Equalities Office is working with the Office for National Statistics and the Government Statistical Service on a cross-government project to develop monitoring standards for sexual orientation and gender identity across central government. These standards will be freely available to the wider public and private sectors, which will enable organisations to introduce measures, such as monitoring the LGBT pay gap, if they so wish.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>As part of our pre-consultation engagement in the run up to publishing the Gender Recognition Act Consultation, the Government Equalities Office met over 70 organisations and stakeholders. These included LGBT organisations, women’s groups, faith organisations, refuges and domestic violence campaign groups, local government, campaign organisations such as Woman’s Place UK, unions, transgender charities, government departments and other European governments. Gendered Intelligence were one of these groups.</p><p> </p><p>The Government Equalities Office is physically based in the Department for Education building in Westminster. Hard copy responses to the consultation must therefore be addressed to the Government Equalities Office in the Department for Education.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>The UK Government supports the work of the Council of Europe and continues to support the European Social Charter (1961). Since the European Social Charter came into force in the UK we have introduced a number of policy and legislative reforms that provide equivalent or greater protections for individuals in the field of equal pay.</p><p> </p><p>We have also ratified a number of international conventions which provide equivalent protections and which the UK has implemented via national legislation.</p><p> </p><p>We are fully committed to the Equal Pay protections in the Equality Act 2010. In 2014, we introduced equal pay audits for when employers are found to have breached equal pay law and in 2017 we introduced gender pay gap reporting.</p><p> </p><p>Our equal pay legislation complies with EU requirements, which are reflected in Article 4.3 of the European Social Charter. We are committed to ensure that the robust protections provided by Equality Acts 2006 and 2010 and equivalent legislation in Northern Ireland continue to apply after the UK leaves the EU, as will Article 157 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union, which will become part of EU-retained law.</p>

star this property answer text <p>An initial assessment of the number of employers required to report under the regulations was made in 2015. Based on the Office for National Statistics’ Interdepartmental Business Register it was estimated that around 8,000 private sector and 1,200 public sector employers would be in scope of the regulations.</p><p>We have been working with employers to ensure that our list reflects the changes since that assessment was made. The nature of business means that this number has changed and it will continue to do so. Employers change in size, often as a result of mergers and restructuring. Many businesses also have a number of subsidiaries, some of which may be in scope. We work closely with employers to ascertain who is required to report in light of this.</p><p>Over 1,000 employers have already reported and more employers report every day. star this property answer text <p>In April 2019, the Government Equalities Office became an integral part of the Cabinet Office. GEO staff are employees of the Cabinet Office, who are responsible for collecting workforce diversity and inclusion data. GEO does not have access to this data as the size of GEO means that individual members of staff could be identifiable.
