	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 24/07/2019 answer text <p>Synthetic cannabinoids are controlled as Class B drugs under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971. There is a maximum penalty of five years’ imprisonment, an unlimited fine, or both for possession of a Class B drug and 14 years’ imprisonment, an unlimited fine, or both, for the supply and production of a Class B drug.</p><p>There was a total of 281 convictions for the principal offence of possession of synthetic cannabinoids in 2018, up from 71 convictions in 2017 and no convictions in 2016. For the principal offences of either supply, possession with intent to supply or production of synthetic cannabinoids there were 18 convictions in 2018, up from 4 convictions in 2017 and 4 convictions in 2016.</p><p>The Government has commissioned the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD) to provide an updated harms assessment on their previous reports on synthetic cannabinoids. The commission also seeks recommendations on whether the current classification under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 of synthetic cannabinoids is appropriate. The advice is due in summer 2020. These figures present a picture of the workforce as at the 31 March and as at 30 September each year.</p><p>Data on the number of officers per 100,000 of the resident population, by police force area, are published on an annual basis. 	question text	To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, what recent representations he has received on the current classification level of synthetic cannabinoids.

	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 11/09/2018 answer text <p>We receive a range of representations on the current classification level of synthetic cannabinoids and we recognise how dangerous synthetic cannabinoids can be and the devastating impact that they can have on communities, families and the individuals taking them.</p><p>That is why we acted to control these substances as class B drugs under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 in 2016, to give the police the powers they need to take action, including making possession illegal and delivering longer sentences for dealers.</p><p>This followed recommendations from the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs that their harms are commensurate with other class B drugs.</p><p>However, we will continue to monitor their impact.</p> answering member constituency Ruislip, Northwood and Pinner answering member printed Mr Nick Hurd question first answered 11/09/2018 14:52:50 answering member 1561 label Biography information for Mr Nick Hurd
