	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 24/07/2023 answer text <p>The information requested is not held centrally.</p><p>Since the general practice contract Regulations were amended in 2020, there has been a contractual requirement for all women to be offered a maternal postnatal consultation, between six and eight weeks postnatally. As defined in the contract, this is a consultation with a general medical practitioner at which the physical and mental health and well-being of the women is reviewed. The maternal postnatal consultation should focus on a review of the mother’s physical and mental health and general wellbeing, using open questioning. NHS England and NHS Improvement expect that during the pandemic practices should continue to offer the consultation to new mothers in an appropriate format, most likely by telephone or video consultation. NHS England and NHS Improvement expect commissioners and providers of maternity care to pay due regard to the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines. NICE guidance on ‘Postnatal care up to eight weeks after birth’ states that at each postnatal contact, women should be asked about their emotional wellbeing, what family and social support they have and their usual coping strategies for dealing with day-to-day matters. At the end of the postnatal period, the coordinating healthcare professional should ensure that the woman’s physical, emotional and social wellbeing is reviewed.
