The small increase of less than 1% from May 13 to May 14 was largely driven by WCA supplier capacity issues, which we have taken steps to address by removing and replacing the supplier appointed by the previous government.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>Fraud and error is currently estimated to be 2.1% of benefit expenditure, down from 2.2% in 2009/10.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>My Department is working hard to reduce Fraud and Error. A number of initiatives have been put in place under the prevent, detect, correct, punish and deter agenda and the introduction of the Single Fraud Investigation Service, tougher penalties, cross Government working and increased recovery powers demonstrate our commitment to getting this right.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p> more like this

star this property answer text <p /> <p><strong> </strong></p><p>There was no cancellation of this child’s DLA award. Following the expiry of a fixed term award, a renewal claim was submitted. This was turned down in April 2014 as evidence at the time suggested that the child was in remission. After the child’s condition then deteriorated again in October 2014, a new claim was received by the Department (on 3 February 2014) and this resulted in an award of the highest rate of both DLA components.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>The numbers of claimants in receipt of Universal Credit at any given point will vary according to a number of factors, such as the prevailing economic conditions and the behavioural change of claimants.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>The last new claims to legacy benefits and tax credits will be accepted during 2017. Following this, the number of people on the remaining legacy claims and tax credit claims will progressively decline, and the Department will migrate the remaining claims to Universal Credit. Should there be no change in the labour market outlook or the pace at which claims are migrated, the current planning assumption is that the bulk of this exercise will be complete by 2019.</p><p> </p><p> </p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>In December 2014 the department published an ad-hoc release of experimental statistics on mandatory reconsideration (MR) requests made between 28<sup>th</sup> October 2013 and 31st October 2014. This included data which showed that on average it took 13 days to clear an ESA MR request.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p><a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/mandatory-reconsiderations-of-dwp-benefit-decisions-data-to-october-2014" target="_blank">https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/mandatory-reconsiderations-of-dwp-benefit-decisions-data-to-october-2014</a></p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>DWP plans to incorporate information on MR into existing regular statistical publications, including information on clearance times. However, before a decision to publish is made DWP statisticians need to ensure that the data is accurate and fit for purpose. When a decision has been made and as each publication is ready, we will pre-announce the improvements in accordance with the UKSA release protocols.</p><p> </p>

star this property answer text <p /> <p>We recognise the importance of consistent messaging in Mandatory Reconsiderations which were introduced in 2013 as a result of the Appeals Reform Project. The need for better information throughout the benefit process was evident, providing clear progression and escalation of any disputes. The claimant is now better informed through this systematic approach plus better and constant messaging.</p><p> </p><p>DWP is continuing improvements in customer communications and ensuring effective communications are sent to claimants. We have a specific team to work with a range of stakeholders and drive improved communications across our different customer areas. We do this by using behavioural insight, innovation and excellent communications practice to improve customer experience and reduce avoidable cost. Through having this specific team, we can ensure product consistency by a consistent body taking forward changes.</p><p> </p><p>There is specific accountability to ensure the accuracy of our communications, the embedding of process compliance and also to ensure that our products meet the needs of both the business and our customers. We seek feedback on messaging from customers and implement changes as a result. For example, customers have fed back that they would like written notification of their request to withdraw and as such, we have implemented a trial to test this. By having accountability in one area, we are able to ensure consistency in the development of products.</p>
