The recent publication of data from the Active Lives: Children and Young People survey confirms that active children are happier: the most active children report a mean happiness score of 7.5 (out of 10), compared to 6.8 for those who are less active. Benefits include building confidence, managing anxiety and depression, and increasing self-esteem, cognitive skills and improving learning and attainment.</p><p> </p><p>In December last year the Department of Health and Social Care and Department for Education published Transforming children and young people’s mental health provision: a green paper, which highlighted how important physical activity is for good mental health and wellbeing. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 29/01/2019 answer text <p>On 10th January 2019, Government announced a new funding commitment from bookmakers worth an estimated £3m this year to ensure the welfare of greyhounds is protected and improved. We expect thousands of racing greyhounds are to be better cared for as a result of this new deal. The commitment is set to increase the total amount of funding from bookmakers to the British Greyhound Racing Fund to an estimated £10m this year.</p><p>The Greyhound Board of Great Britain (GBGB), responsible for the governance, regulation and management of the sport of licensed greyhound racing in England, Scotland and Wales, has committed to improve licensing and inspection standards on and off track. I look forward to meeting with them and the Greyhound Forum in the coming weeks to discuss this work further. A full audit of trainers’ residential kennels is underway to prioritise upgrades and GBGB has allocated £400,000 specifically for kennel upgrades in 2019. Sport England has committed up to £194 million of investment into children and young people over the next four years, which includes the Families Fund: up to £40 million invested in projects that offer new opportunities for families with children to be active together. Sport England will also provide specialist training to at least two teachers in every secondary school in England by 2020, and will invest £28m into Satellite Clubs between 2017-2021.</p><p> </p><p>DCMS are working closely with the Department for Education and the Department of Health and Social Care on a new School Sport and Activity Action plan, which will be published in Spring 2019. This is higher than in 2012, when 21% of boys and 16% of girls met the guidelines. However this excludes school-based activities and active travel. This survey launched in schools in September 2017 and will measure in much more detail how children and young people engage in sport and physical activity, and how many are meeting the Chief Medical Officer's guidelines, both in and out of school. Use of our waterways by all can be a creative and fun way to engage with the natural world and to stay healthy.</p><p> </p><p>Sport England is actively engaged with British Canoeing and the Canal and River Trust to get more people from all backgrounds active. These visitors spent £128 million in Nottinghamshire, up 23% on the previous year.</p><p> </p><p>VisitBritain and VisitEngland are responsible for promoting the UK as a tourist destination, through a range of different initiatives and campaigns. VisitBritain receive annual grant-in-aid totalling £19.4m from DCMS and VisitEngland receive £7m.</p><p> </p><p>The Discover England Fund, administered by VisitEngland, has invested in the development of tourism product across the East Midlands area. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 05/12/2018 answer text <p>DCMS requested advice from the Gambling Commission on potential reforms to society lotteries following the publication of the Select Committee’s report in March 2015. The Gambling Commission were asked to make recommendations considering three high level objectives:</p><p> </p><ol><li>The regulatory framework for society lotteries should not be overly burdensome and new entrants should not face unnecessary barriers;</li></ol><p> </p><ol start="2"><li>Public trust and confidence in society lotteries and the good causes with which they are associated should be maintained;</li></ol><p> </p><ol start="3"><li>Reform should not jeopardise the position of the National Lottery and its returns to good causes.</li></ol><p> </p><p>This advice was published in June 2018 alongside the consultation on society lotteries which closed on 7 September 2018.</p><p> </p><p>Evidence from the Gambling Commission suggests that to date society lottery sales have not significantly impacted the National Lottery. Any changes must maintain this balance, enabling society lotteries to grow without detriment to the National Lottery.</p><p> </p><p>The consultation received over 1,600 responses and my officials are now in the process of considering the range of views that were submitted, including evidence about the potential impact on the National Lottery. However, for some charities, lottery funding can be a vital source of income. In 2017/18 good cause returns from the National Lottery were £1.6 billion and large society lotteries raised £296 million for good causes. Many charities are licensed to run their own lotteries as a fundraising tool, which directly supports their charitable initiatives.</p><p><br> Society Lotteries usually provide unrestricted funding which can be particularly beneficial for charities as it enables the charity to determine how to use the funding to best deliver its aims and support its beneficiaries.
