We will champion the Vision for a Resilient Urban Forest, developed by the Urban Forestry and Woodlands Advisory Committee Network. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 13/03/2020 answer text <p>The Government is committed to increasing the number of trees on streets and in urban environments, in and around the places where most people live and work.</p><p> </p><p>In 2019, we launched the £10 million Urban Tree Challenge Fund which is providing matched funding to councils, charities, community groups, private sector bodies and individuals to plant 130,000 trees, including 20,000 street trees, in our towns and cities.</p><p> </p><p>In addition, we are giving hundreds of thousands of schoolchildren across England, mostly in urban areas, the opportunity to plant trees in schools and local communities, as part of our 1 million Trees for Schools programme in partnership with the Community Forest Trust and the Woodland Trust.</p><p> </p><p>The Environment Bill includes new duties on councils to consult when felling street trees and increased penalties for illegal felling. As part of our 25 Year Environment Plant, we have worked with stakeholders to develop and publish an Urban Tree Manual and we are developing policies to ensure all new streets are lined with trees. This is reflected in the significant increase in investment on trees announced in the budget. Urban trees play a crucial role in providing health and wellbeing benefits for communities, flood risk alleviation and carbon sequestration.</p><p> </p><p>The Urban Tree Challenge Fund (UTCF) was launched in May 2019 and aims to plant 130,000 trees across England’s towns and cities by 2021. The first round of the UTCF closed in August 2019 and is funding the planting of over 22,000 large trees and 28,000 small trees in urban areas. The second round of the UTCF opened in March, for successful applicants to plant this winter. As well as providing funding for the planting of large and small trees in urban and peri-urban areas, the UTCF provides three years of establishment payments following planting.</p><p> </p><p>We will shortly be consulting the public on an English Tree Strategy. They help clean and cool the air, prevent flood risk, and support our physical and mental health.</p><p> </p><p>The Government is committed to increasing tree planting across the UK throughout this parliament to 30,000 hectares per year by 2025. We have not set a specific target for the number of urban trees which will be planted, but have announced a Nature for Climate Fund which will support planting in rural and urban areas.</p><p> </p><p>We are currently planting through the Urban Tree Challenge Fund, which supports planting of at least 20,000 large trees and 110,000 small trees in urban areas in England. The Air Quality Expert Group (AQEG) report on the <em>Effects of Vegetation on Urban Air Pollution, </em>due to be published this year, concludes that overall, vegetation and trees in particular are beneficial for air quality, but they are not a solution to the air quality problems at a city scale.
