These vacancy statistics are published for England and at the regional level of North, Midlands and East, London and South.</p><p>NHS Digital published the latest NHS Improvement vacancy data which can be found in the following link:</p><p><a href="https://digital.nhs.uk/data-and-information/publications/statistical/nhs-vacancies-survey/february-2015---march-2019-provisional-experimental-statistics" target="_blank">https://digital.nhs.uk/data-and-information/publications/statistical/nhs-vacancies-survey/february-2015---march-2019-provisional-experimental-statistics</a></p><p>The latest statistics show that as of March 2019, there are over 39,500 nursing and midwifery vacancies in England. In London, there are over 9,300 nursing and midwifery vacancies. The majority of these are filled by bank and agency staff.</p><p>NHS Improvement and NHS Employers have been working in partnership to deliver a national programme of action to support National Health Service trusts to improve retention of the nursing and clinical workforce. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 01/07/2019 answer text <p>Since April 2017, NHS Improvement collects vacancy rates of medical staff from individual National Health Service providers and publish them as part of its ‘Quarterly performance of the NHS provider sector’ report. The vacancy data is published for three staff groups; doctors, nurses and ‘other staff’. The report can be found in the following link:</p><p><a href="https://improvement.nhs.uk/documents/5404/Performance_of_the_NHS_provider_sector_for_the_quarter_4_1819.pdf" target="_blank">https://improvement.nhs.uk/documents/5404/Performance_of_the_NHS_provider_sector_for_the_quarter_4_1819.pdf</a></p><p>The latest available data as at March 2019, shows there are over 39,500 nursing and midwifery vacancies across the NHS. This is a vacancy rate of 11.1%. There are 40,300 nursing and midwifery temporary staff (bank and agency) who are used to fill in these vacancies as well as short and long-term sickness absence and maternity leave.</p><p>Skills for Care estimates that in 2017/18, there are over 4,400 vacant registered nursing jobs in social care. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 26/03/2019 answer text <p>Approximately 80% of vacancies are filled by a combination of bank and agency staff. Bank and agency staff are also used to fill non-vacancy gaps such as sickness and maternity, therefore NHS Improvement is unable to provide a specific proportion of vacancies which are currently unfilled by temporary staff.</p><p> </p><p>Many of the positions considered to be ‘vacant’ are in fact filled by highly trained staff who either choose to work additional shifts alongside their substantive posts, or who have chosen to work flexibly full time. The Department is committed to developing staff banks in a way that reflects the contribution of this vital part of the workforce.</p><p> </p><p>While there are vacancies in the National Health Service, a lot of work is underway to improve recruitment and retention.
