The latest data published by the University and College Admissions Service (on 11 July 2019) shows that there has been a 4.6% increase in the number of undergraduate applicants to pre-registration nursing and midwifery courses when compared to the equivalent point in 2018.</p><p>The Department has put in place a number of actions to increase nursing workforce supply, including improving staff retention, return to practice, overseas recruitment and expanding nursing associates.</p><p>The interim People Plan (published on 3 June 2019) puts staff at the heart of National Health Service policy and delivery and sets out how we will secure a capable and motivated multidisciplinary healthcare workforce, of a sufficient size, to meet population health needs. It sets out the immediate actions needed to grow the nursing workforce across all settings by over 40,000 in the next five years. The Chancellor announced on 1 August that he has made an additional £2.1 billion available to prepare for EU Exit which includes the creation of an Operational Contingency Fund, to meet the costs of ‘no deal’ operations. Being ordinarily resident broadly means living here on a lawful and properly-settled basis for the time being.</p><p>It is not currently necessary for an EU citizen to demonstrate that they have status under the EU Settlement Scheme in order to access the NHS. The European Settlement Scheme secures the residency rights for EU citizens who have been residing in the UK prior to the day we leave the EU. On 31 July, HM Treasury announced an additional £434 million made available to help ensure continuity of supply of vital medicines and medical products, including through freight capacity, warehousing and stockpiling.</p><p> </p><p>Patients, hospitals and community pharmacies do not need to and should not undertake any stockpiling. A clinician’s role is to provide the relevant healthcare for patients and make decisions on their treatment based on their clinical needs. This is subject to negotiations, which are ongoing.</p><p>In the event that we cannot reach an agreement with EU Member States, EHICs may no longer be valid after exit day. It is not possible for the UK Government to guarantee access unilaterally to healthcare abroad, as this depends on decisions by Member States.</p><p>The Government has always advised UK nationals to take out comprehensive travel insurance when going overseas, both to EU and non-EU destinations. This is on top of the £2.4 billion capital investment awarded to over 150 sustainability and transformation partnership (STP) schemes across England since July 2017 to modernise and transform the National Health Service’s buildings and services.</p><p>Of the £854 million, £21.3 million has been awarded to United Lincolnshire Hospitals Trust for the Transforming Urgent and Emergency Care at Pilgrim Hospital Boston scheme, which will improve patient flow in Boston by developing urgent and emergency care zones in accident and emergency. In December 2018, Lincolnshire also benefitted from United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust’s £1.5 million scheme for a Multi-Purpose Education Centre to support University Medical School of Excellence (Lincoln).</p><p>An additional £1 billion was also announced on 5 August to be spent this financial year, allowing existing upgrade programmes to proceed and tackle the most urgent infrastructure projects across the country.</p><p>My Rt. hon. This includes being able to access National Health Service care without charge on the basis that they are ordinarily resident in the UK, and the NHS will apply the same eligibility tests as it does now. It should be noted that EU citizens already living in the UK on exit day have up until 31 December 2020 to apply for Settled Status, but their access to healthcare will remain the same regardless of whether they apply for Settled Status before then.</p><p>The Government has proposed to all EU Member States that when we leave, we should maintain the existing healthcare arrangements including the European Healthcare Insurance Card (EHIC) Scheme until 31 December 2020, with the aim of minimising disruption to healthcare provision for UK nationals and EU citizens. This is subject to agreement by individual EU Member States.</p><p>For those Spanish and Portuguese citizens visiting the UK after exit day, if agreed under bilateral agreements with Spain and Portugal, visitors will be able to use their EHIC as they do now. Sajid Javid MP) announced a £210 million package of support for the National Health Service workforce. Funding includes personal development budgets to support nurses’ learning and development needs over the next three years, and a funding boost to wider education and training budgets to support delivery of the NHS Long Term Plan.</p><p>The latest Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) data as of 30 August, shows there were 20,190 students accepted onto nursing and midwifery courses, an increase of 4.3% compared to the same point in August 2018.
