star this property answer text <p>We have not yet made final decisions on what the entitlement criteria for free school meals under Universal Credit will be. We are working with the Department for Work and Pensions to develop suitable criteria which will ensure that free lunches continue to be available to those families on the lowest incomes.</p><p>We will allow good time for interested parties to comment on our proposals before we introduce the new criteria.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>Local authority maintained schools are able to recover VAT costs because they are part of local government and their expenditure is regarded as the expenditure of the local authority. Local authorities as a whole are able to recover VAT costs because they are subsidiary tax-raising authorities within the United Kingdom.</p><p> </p><p>When schools move outside local authority control to become academies they are no longer covered by this regime. Since 2011, legislation has been in force that ensures that in this respect academies are treated in the same way as maintained schools. Academies can recover directly from HMRC the VAT which they incur on goods and services<em>.</em></p><p> </p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>The Chief Inspector has powers to carry out an inspection of the performance of a particular local authority function as set out in Section 136(1)(b) of the Education and Inspections Act 2006. Specifically, he can use this power to inspect how well the local authority is fulfilling its general duty to promote high standards and fulfilment by every child of their educational potential as set out in Section 13A of the Education Act 1996.</p><p> </p><p>These powers are separate from his powers and duties in relation to the inspection of individual schools which are set out in Section 5 and Section 8 of the Education Act 2005. Section 5 requires Her Majesty's Chief Inspector to inspect individual schools at prescribed intervals, and Section 8 Education Act 2005, contains a general power which enables the Chief Inspector to call for the inspection of a school in circumstances where he is not required to inspect.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>The National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL) decided to discontinue financial contributions to the National Student Survey (NSS) to focus resources on the annual survey of newly qualified teachers. This survey is more in-depth and specific to initial teacher training than the NSS and provides valuable information about the quality of initial teacher training and how well that training has prepared newly qualified teachers for specific aspects of teaching.</p><p> </p><p>Since making this decision, NCTL has agreed to continue funding for a further year, to ensure time for a smooth transition to alternative arrangements, should the sector wish to continue receiving feedback through the National Student Survey.</p><p> </p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>The Department for Education does not hold this data.</p><p> </p><p>Revised school food standards regulations for local authority maintained schools, academies that opened prior to September 2010 and academies and free schools in England entering into a funding agreement from June 2014 will come into effect on 1 January 2015.</p><p> </p><p>The authors of the School Food Plan are encouraging academies and free schools to commit voluntarily to the new standards. 99% of those academies which responded to a survey by the School Food Trust in 2012 said they were committed to following the new food standards. All academies and free schools signing their funding agreements from spring 2014 are required to adhere to the new, less bureaucratic school food standards.</p><p> </p> more like this
