The latest data published by UCAS on 25 September 2014 in its ‘UCAS Teacher Training statistical releases’[1], indicates that there will be an increase in computing trainees commencing initial teacher training (ITT) this year, although this will not be certain until the 2014/15 ITT census is published.</p><p>For computing trainees starting their training in 2015/16, we have increased bursaries to up to £25,000 tax-free. We are also funding a prestigious scholarship scheme for computing trainees worth £25,000 tax-free and offering a range of professional benefits. Additional funding has also been made available to schools offering School Direct (salaried) places in computing to boost starting salaries; computing trainees will be able to earn over £21,000 nationally and £25,000 in inner London.</p><p>There are a range of other incentives in place to attract high quality computing trainees into the teaching profession, including:</p><ol><li>The delivery of a targeted marketing campaign to encourage high-quality computing graduates and potential career changers to consider a career in teaching.</li><li>The offering of tailored support for graduates and career changers interested in teaching computing, including access to a School Experience Programme.</li><li>Funding of computing subject knowledge enhancement (SKE) programmes, which prepare applicants for teacher training by building up or refreshing their existing knowledge. 31% of computing applicants who accepted an ITT place for 2013/14 accessed a SKE course.</li></ol><p>[1] <a href="http://www.ucas.com/data-analysis/ucas-teacher-training-statistical-releases" target="_blank">www.ucas.com/data-analysis/ucas-teacher-training-statistical-releases</a></p> answering member constituency Yeovil answering member printed Mr David Laws question first answered 24/10/2014 10:10:23 answering member 1473 label Biography information for Mr David Laws

This includes 1,338 who have completed the programme and 2,366 currently training in England.</p><p> </p><p>Teach First started placing trainees in Hull in 2011. Sir Andrew Carter also considered this issue in his independent Review of ITT. <br> <br> It is too early to carry out a final comparison of the new routes into teaching. We would need data on their trainees’ impact in the classroom, which is not yet available for our new routes. The first full cohort of School Direct trainees have, for example, only been teaching for one term. <br> <br> The Department has, however, recently initiated a project to link together the School Workforce Census and 2013/14 ITT performance profiles in order to piece together teachers’ professional journeys from ITT into employment and their subsequent progression. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 01/09/2014 answer text <p>School Direct funding is paid to schools by the Education Funding Agency (EFA) on behalf of the National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL). EFA gains assurance on all funding transferred, including the NCTL funds. Lead schools have relinquished places to train teachers in all subject areas with the exception of applied science.</p><p> </p><p>This is based on an analysis of our records using data extracted on 22 July 2014. Earlier this year, we made a number of places available for those schools that have proven popular with applicants and recruited well. We extended this offer to higher education providers in June.</p><p> </p><p>Since they were initially agreed, we have agreed increases to higher education institution (HEI) allocations for a number of reasons. For example, we allocated more places in physics and mathematics throughout the year and we also allowed transfers between particular subjects. The additional places allocated as a result of our offer in June are just part of changes agreed to HEI allocations.
