star this property answer text The Foreign Secretary, my Rt Hon. Friend the Member for Uxbridge and South Ruislip (Mr Johnson), has made clear that the Government continues to be fully supportive of the work of the work of the UN Special Envoy. The UK’s funding for the UN Special Envoy for Yemen’s office, alongside support from other donors, is assisting the UN-led peace process. It enables the UN to recruit technical experts on issues such as mediation, ceasefire design and monitoring, and disarmament and demobilisation. Our support is also helping the UN deliver the logistics of holding formal talks, shuttle diplomacy, and engaging with other political actors in Yemen. more like this

The UK has used its role as penholder at the UN Security Council to help push the Yemen peace process forward. In September 2019, the UK co-hosted a political event at the UN General Assembly to coordinate the international community's support for the UN-led peace process. We are supporting the UN Special Envoy Martin Griffiths to protect progress on de-escalation and the Saudi-brokered Riyadh Agreement in preparation for wider political consultations.
more like this

We note the initial progress achieved by the parties towards phase one of the redeployment of forces in Hodeidah and urge the parties to take the necessary next steps, in accordance with the agreed concept of operations, towards full implementation of the Hodeidah Agreement. The Yemeni parties must engage constructively and in good faith. The UK has played a leading role in diplomatic efforts, including bringing together key actors to seek a peaceful solution. As part of this, I hosted a Ministerial-level meeting with Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, US and UN Special Envoy at the UN General Assembly in September.

The UK also proposed the Presidential Statement passed at the UN Security Council in June this year, which called for an end to the fighting and a return to UN-led peace talks. We are now working with our international and regional partners to ensure that the Security Council's words are converted into action as a matter of urgency. For example, we supported the Yemeni Women's Pact for Peace and Security (through UN Women), which aimed to increase female leadership and inclusion in the peace processes.

We continue to support the UN Special Envoy, who is actively engaging women in the peace process and involving a wide range of Yemenis. We fund a Senior Gender Adviser position and an Economist position in his office. Complementing the UN's efforts to deliver a durable and sustainable peace deal, the UK's Conflict Stability and Security Fund (CSSF) has supported a range of Track II (Influential Figures) and Track III (Civil Society and Local Groups) initiatives which promote a more inclusive political dialogue, including at the subnational level.
