This was introduced at the start of the current financial year and we have remained within that target for <br>the year to date.<br><br>The current average time an asylum seeker waits before attending an appointment is 10 days. This data has been derived from internal management information and should therefore be treated as provisional and subject to change. This <br>information has not been quality assured under National Statistics protocols. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 06/03/2015 answer text <p>The last Labour Government passed the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999 to <br>alleviate the pressure on local authorities in London and the South East of <br>England where most asylum seekers made their asylum claims. <br><br>The effect of the 1999 Act was to pass the support responsibility to the Home <br>Office. Regional dispersal policy established by the then Home Secretary in <br>2000 provides that, as a general rule, asylum seekers should be accommodated in <br>areas where there is a greater supply of suitable and cheaper accommodation.<br><br>Asylum seekers who need accommodation are housed across the UK <br>according to an agreed ratio, based on various regional factors. The Home <br>Office has voluntary agreements with 95 local authorities throughout the United <br>Kingdom in accepting the dispersal of asylum seekers. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 10/03/2015 answer text <p>The Government has a legal obligation to provide support to asylum applicants who would otherwise be destitute. Support is provided in form of subsistence allowance and accommodation. The Government provides funding for Strategy Migration Partnerships which act as a focal point for all local authorities in the relevant region to consider and resolve any issues relating to dispersals and migration. The funding for 2014/15 was £1.325 million.<br><br>The Government also provides additional funding to local authorities to support Unaccompanied Asylum Seeking Children, those leaving care and asylum seekers who are turning 18. The total funding for these in 2013/14 financial year was £77.2 million. Accommodation providers are contractually required to liaise and consult with local authorities to ensure that the impacts of dispersal have been fully assessed. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 24/03/2015 answer text <p>At the end of 2012, there were approximately 41,000 ‘legacy’ asylum and migration cases where the original application was submitted before March 2007. The Home Office committed to review and communicate decisions on all of these by the end of 2014. The work to review and communicate decisions was completed by the end of December 2014 aside from a small number of cases where an external impediment, such as an outstanding criminal investigation or ongoing litigation, prevented us completing our review<br><br>There are cases where the Home Office has completed a review and decided that it is not appropriate to grant leave but not yet removed the applicant. It is for this reason that we committed to review and communicate decisions on the pre March 2007 cases but did not guarantee that all will be concluded by the end of 2014. We are reviewing asylum processes to provide a better experience for our customers such as moving administrative tasks from the asylum interview into the screening process or revising decision letters to make them more user-friendly for customers. <br><br>We are also implementing a number of pilot initiatives to modernise our case working processes including exploring the use of Summary Notes within our asylum interviews. At the same time we are looking to invest in technology to automatically obtain a transcript of an asylum interview. This should improve the efficiency of our interviewing process and reduce the need for our customers to have lengthy interviews regarding their claim whilst we are also looking to expand on the use of video conferencing equipment to build greater flexibility into the asylum case working process and to realise potential savings. We are seeking to digitalise our work where possible, removing the need for paper-based files so our work can be moved around the country to meet service demands. <br><br>We have also made improvements to our decision making processing times. We aim to decide all straightforward asylum claims within six months. We recognise that asylum cases are often complex and require our full and thorough consideration, meaning that some decisions will take longer than six months. Those cases that do take longer than six months are actively managed to ensure they are concluded as promptly as possible. <br><br>We have significantly improved our suite of guidance on considering asylum claims, including key instructions on asylum interviews and assessing credibility. We have streamlined processes by reducing the volume of paperwork required and cutting duplication in the asylum process, including improvements to the way in which decisions are explained to applicants in correspondence to make it easier to understand.
