It is for them to work with their staff, accredited local security management specialists, their local Police and Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) to put in place policies and procedures aimed at reducing the likelihood of abusive and violent conduct while ensuring appropriate action is taken, including criminal or administrative sanctions, against perpetrators deliberately committing such acts.</p><p> </p><p>The new NHS Violence Reduction Strategy developed by the NHS will help ambulance services tackle abusive and violent conduct against their staff. The Strategy includes training in de-escalation techniques, continuing professional development of security staff, improving the safety of working environments, ensuring all organisations are clear about their responsibilities, a publicity campaign and work with the Police and CPS to ensure appropriate use is made of existing legislation and the new Assault on Emergency Workers (Offences) Act 2018. In preparing the Strategy, there was an event with ambulance providers and work will start soon for a plan to tackle abusive and violent conduct against ambulance staff.</p><p> </p><p>Two ambulance services are assessing how body cameras could be used to help protect paramedics. HEE, together with regulators and Royal Colleges, ensures undergraduate and post graduate curriculum meets the needs of all patients.</p><p> </p><p>HEE are also working with stakeholders to support the awareness raising of the mental health needs of the LGBT community. The number of acceptances to nursing and midwifery courses in 2018 is consistent with earlier years, at approximately 22,000.</p><p> </p><p>Final UCAS data will be published in December 2018.</p><p> </p><p>The Department is working with relevant bodies across health and education to monitor the effects of the healthcare funding reforms.</p><p> </p><p>We have been working with Health Education England and the university sector to ensure students continued to apply for courses this year. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 23/11/2018 answer text <p>Since April 2017, NHS Improvement has collected vacancy rates of medical and nursing staff from individual National Health Service providers and publish them as part of their Quarterly performance of the NHS provider sector report.</p><p> </p><p>The latest NHS Improvement estimate is that in England, there are 41,722 whole time equivalent nursing vacancies, of which approximately 80% are being filled by a combination of bank and agency staff, as at 30 June 2018.</p><p> </p><p>NHS Improvement also estimated that in England there are 11,576 whole time equivalent doctor vacancies, of which approximately 85% are being filled by a combination of bank and agency staff, as at 30 June 2018.</p><p> </p><p>However, the bank and agency staff are not purely covering the vacancy gap. The temporary staff will also be used to backfill for sickness, maternity and secondments. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 26/11/2018 answer text <p>There was no change in funding for nursing higher education in 2016.</p><p> </p><p>In the Spending Review 2015 the Government announced that tuition and maintenance costs for new pre-registration nursing, midwifery and allied health degree students would be funded by the student loans system from 2017.</p><p> </p><p>Typically, students on the loan system are at least 25% better off whilst they study than the previous funding system and eligible healthcare students have access to additional non-repayable Government funding of £1,000 for childcare, funding for travel to clinical placements and an exceptional support fund of up to £3,000 per student per academic year.</p><p> </p><p>The latest University and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) data from October 2018 shows that demand for nursing courses remains strong, with applications exceeding available places in 2018. This includes understanding the financial implications of the UK exiting the EU for the National Health Service and wider care system, and, where appropriate, mitigation planning for any risks. The Department is working with its partners across Government, arms-length bodies and industry to ensure that all relevant parties are prepared for exiting the EU, and the Secretary of State sends regular communication to frontline NHS organisations about EU Exit preparations.</p><p> </p><p>It is in everyone’s interests to secure a good deal for both sides. We expect to secure a good deal. However, it is the duty of a responsible government to contingency-plan for all potential EU exit scenarios, and that is exactly what we are doing. Our plans are well developed and have been designed to provide the flexibility to respond to all scenarios and ensure the smoothest exit in all outcomes.
