But uncontrolled migration erodes public confidence, damages economies, and places those on the move in situations of great vulnerability. The UK is taking significant steps to tackle uncontrolled migration both in our domestic policy work and in our ODA-funded programmes by:</p><ul><li><p>Addressing the root causes of irregular migration, through our targeted assistance for livelihoods, healthcare, education and economic development;</p></li></ul><ul><li>Tackling modern slavery and organised immigration crime</li><li>Supporting enhanced border management</li><li>Providing critical humanitarian support and protection for vulnerable migrants, as well as offering voluntary return and vital reintegration support to those wishing to return home</li><li>Supporting refugees to stay in a first safe country through our humanitarian and development work in Africa, the Middle East and Asia</li></ul><p> </p><p>The UK Government is supportive of the UN’s Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration. The Compact is one way in which we are working to ensure that UK migration priorities are embedded throughout the international system. It is a step forward in international co-operation to tackle irregular migration and helpful framework to help us deliver our commitments under the Sustainable Development Goals.</p><p>The Compact is not legally binding. Instead, it creates a framework that will allow countries to work together to make migration more beneficial for everyone. It protects every State’s right to determine its own immigration policies, including in areas such as asylum, border controls and returns of illegal migrants.</p><p>My colleague, the Right Hon. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 17/12/2018 answer text <p>Highways England regularly monitors the performance of the Strategic Road Network to ensure its efficient operation and performance.</p><p> </p><p>The A21 Tonbridge to Pembury improvement scheme started construction in Spring 2015 and was completed in summer 2017.</p><p> </p><p>The impact of the completed scheme, which is expected to reduce congestion and improve journey times, will be studied next year (2019) as part of Highways England’s programme of Post Opening Project Evaluation. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 18/12/2018 answer text <p>Development work is underway on a new connection at Ashford between High Speed 1 and the Marshlink line, with the aim of improving journey times in the Hastings area. Network Rail reports that work is 80% complete at the design stage. The delivery of the new connection is subject to both identifying a feasible option and funding being secured for it. Design is expected to be complete in January 2019 and will be followed by estimating activity and completion of the business case in February 2019.</p><p> </p><p>Electrification of the railway between Ore and Ashford forms Phase 3 of the High Speed to Hastings &amp; Bexhill initiative (the railway between Bexhill and Ore is already electrified to 750v DC). This number will vary slightly each month as MWD enter and leave the service. All dogs are owned by the Defence Animal Training Regiment and the Department does not hold information on their exact breakdown by single Service.</p><p> </p><p>Through the contract with Leidos, the MOD's logistic specialist partner, the MOD spent around £227,000 on dog food between 1 October 2017 to 30 September 2018.
