We are considering how we take this review forward, which will be informed by the forthcoming Defence Science Expert Committee RF sensing report. We will of course consult with industry in any next steps and this would include the offshore wind industry through the Aviation Management Board, where appropriate to do so.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>NATO remains the cornerstone of the UK's defence and security and we stand by our unwavering commitment to collective defence under to Article 5. of the Washington Treaty.</p><p>Our Defence budget is currently the largest of any European Ally, with the UK exceeding its commitments under NATO's Defence Investment Pledge to spend 2% of GDP on defence.</p><p>We send Armed Forces personnel to participate in every NATO operation and mission. RAF fast jets are conducting NATO air policing, Royal Navy warships patrol the High North and Eastern Mediterranean in NATO deployments and the British Army defends NATO's Eastern Flank in Estonia. Our nuclear deterrent also makes a key contribution to Euro-Atlantic security.</p><p>At the NATO Summit, the UK confirmed its forward leaning offer to NATO's future New Force Model, making available more fighter jets, almost all of the Royal Navy, including Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carriers, and more brigade-sized land forces. The UK also played a leading role in shaping NATO's new Strategic Concept to ensure the Alliance continues to adapt to future challenges.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p>

star this property answer text <p>The Ministry of Defence takes its responsibilities to the general public very seriously indeed and would prefer not to cause any disturbance to the general public, including to those in Hull. However, there are no uninhabited areas of the UK large enough to cater for essential training needs.</p><p>Flying operations in the UK Military Low Flying System are avoided within major built-up areas (generally those with a population of over 10,000), although it is not always possible to avoid flying over the outskirts of towns and villages. A range of measures are in place to provide a balance between military training requirements and the need to avoid excessive noise on the ground. These include restrictions placed on the height, speeds and operating procedures of military aircraft in the UK Military Low Flying System.</p><p>Realistic training at night is essential to ensure aircrew are proficient in the necessary skills and to exploit our technological edge. The amount of night low flying remains proportional to the operational requirement.</p>

star this property answer text <p>Legal actions citing the Human Rights Act, whether judicial reviews or personal injury claims, are normally brought against the Secretary of State for Defence rather than against individual Service personnel (on the basis that the Ministry of Defence is vicariously liable for their acts). The Courts allow or dismiss claims in whole or in part. There have been approximately 1,400 such judicial review claims and 1,000 personal injury claims stemming from our military oprations in Iraq and Afgahnistan. The vast majority of them have not yet been heard, as they are queued behind a small number of lead cases. It is the view of the Government, based on the findings of the Al-Sweady public inquiry and other evidence, that large numbers of these claims are likely to be exaggerated or spurious.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>The 2012 National Security through Technology White Paper (CM8278) explains the Government's approach to Defence procurement, including the circumstances in which we take action to protect our operational advantage and freedom of action. The 2015 Strategic Defence and Security Review (CM9161) reiterated the Government's commitment to this approach and identified the need to adopt a more vigilant and systematic approach to managing critical supply chains.</p><p>The F35B Lightning II will deliver a potent fifth generation fighter capability for our Armed Forces. The UK has now been established as a maintenance and repair hub for all European F-35s. Together with UK industry's 15 per cent share by value of the manufacture of more than 3,000 planned aircraft, this will sustain thousands of high-quality UK jobs into the 2040s.</p><p>The UK has been chosen by the United States to become a global hub for maintenance and support services for the F35 programme. The initial contracts will generate hundreds of millions of pounds of revenue, supporting thousands of highly skilled jobs, including in Wales.</p><p>It is too early to take decisions on what might constitute any Future Combat Air System (FCAS), but through the FCAS Technology Initiative we are working in partnership with UK defence industry and our closest allies to develop key technologies while also sustaining the UK industrial base.</p><p>This technology initiative is built around a national programme of activities to maintain and enhance the UK's position as a global leader in combat air technologies. It also includes programmes to develop an advanced unmanned combat air system demonstrator in partnership with France and bilateral projects with the United States.</p>
