star this property answer text <p>The Ministry of Defence (MOD) regularly consults with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and other Government Departments and intelligence agencies, as well as our allies and partners, constantly to review or identify potential threats to UK Overseas Territories (UKOTs). In the first instance the MOD seeks to deter such attacks using deterrence measures including, where necessary, permanently based military garrisons or dedicated patrols, visits by deployed military forces, and more broadly the maintenance of world class deployable military forces. Should deterrence fail to prevent an attack, the Department remains confident that it has the necessary contingency plans and high readiness deployable forces in the UK and elsewhere to respond accordingly to any attack on a UKOT.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>The Ministry of Defence has active defence engagement programmes across Africa that offer military support to African countries and institutions. The intent is to help build the capacity of African countries and institutions to handle the complex security challenges they face, including the threat posed by Islamic extremist organisations. This is achieved by delivering a range of military support including; resident training teams; short term training teams; use of our Defence Attache network; and, the provision of academic and specialised UK military courses. We plan to continue to develop and sustain this activity.<br><br>Key planned military support to African countries facing complex security challenges where Islamic extremism is a significant component, includes:<br><br>The commitment we gave at the London Ministerial on security in Nigeria on 12 June 2014, to offer direct training and advice to the Nigerian forces engaged in the fight against Boko Haram and other terrorist groups. This is in addition to our ongoing assistance to Nigerian Armed Forces’s efforts to locate the Chibok School girls, who were kidnapped by Boko Haram in April;<br><br>Sustaining the training and advisory support we provide to the African Union Mission in Somalia to assist its efforts to combat Al Shabab. We will also continue to assist in the development of a Somali National Army that can protect Somalia’s internal security and borders in the longer-term;<br><br>Continued advice and assistance to the Libyan Armed Forces through the Defence Advisory and Training Team (DATT) in Tripoli; part of the UK’s £62 million Security, Justice and Defence programme. The UK has also committed to train 2,000 of the 10,000 Libyan soldiers for the General Purpose Force in conjunction with those trained by Turkey, Italy and the US. Training of the first tranche began at Bassingbourn in June 2014.<br><br>Delivery of tactical training to the Mali Armed Forces through our contribution to the European Union Training Team (Mali).</p>

star this property answer text <p>The Ministry of Defence (MOD) has robust measures in place to prepare our Service personnel for civilian life. As Lord Ashcroft highlighted in his recent review of transition arrangements, the vast majority of Service leavers make a successful transition.<br><br>All Service leavers are entitled to resettlement assistance from the Ministry of Defence funded Career Transition Partnership (CTP). We work with all industry sectors to offer Service leavers a range of employment options through the creation of partnerships with major organisations such as BAE Systems, Jaguar, Siemens and Google. The CTP helped 85% of Service leavers find sustainable employment within six months of leaving the Armed Forces in 2013-14. <br><br>The MOD supports a range of schemes to help Service leavers secure appropriate accommodation, and provides briefings on housing and finance. The £200 million Forces Help to Buy scheme began on 1 April 2014, meaning that Servicemen and women can now borrow up to 50% of their salary, up to a maximum of £25,000, interest free, providing a boost to those needing to find a deposit to buy their own home. In February 2014, LIBOR funding of £40 million was announced to support charities which assist veterans with housing needs. Projects are expected to include hostels and half-way houses for veterans, supported housing for the wounded, injured and sick, and long-term care homes.<br><br>The Veterans UK Helpline can provide advice on a wide range of issues, including healthcare, accommodation, training and benefits. star this property answer text <p>Storm Shadow continues to provide the UK with a unique capability for precision strike against high value hardened targets without exposing aircraft and crews to higher than necessary levels of risk.<br><br>The Storm Shadow Mid Life Refurbishment concept phase is considering options to maintain the Storm Shadow Weapons System Capability in order to meet our planning requirements. We have agreed to exchange information with France on our respective national refurbishment and upgrade programmes for Storm Shadow/SCALP EG (the French name for Storm Shadow), underpinned by a Memorandum of Understanding that was signed at the Farnborough International Air Show in July 2014.<br><br>I announced in July that the Storm Shadow is to be integrated onto the RAF's Typhoon aircraft to enter service in 2018.</p> more like this
