	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 21/02/2024 answer text <p>This Government takes the mental health of the police workforce very seriously and we are committed to making improvements in wellbeing support for officers and staff.</p><p>Through the Police Covenant, we continue to work with policing partners to ensure those who work in policing and their families get the support and protection they need. We have already delivered pre-deployment mental health support for all new starters and established a Chief Medical Officer for policing.</p><p>Suicide is a particularly sensitive and difficult issue and usually involves a combination of many factors, which means that it is not straightforward to classify by default as a work-related incident. There is an existing system in which deaths are examined by a Coroner and a Coroner can already refer cases to the Health and Safety Executive, or other public body, if they consider there is an ongoing risk to others.</p><p>Any suicide is devastating and that is why, through the Police Covenant, we have developed a priority work stream on suicide prevention. This includes providing ongoing funding to the National Police Wellbeing Service (NPWS) in England and Wales. The NPWS is helping forces to identify the impacts of the role on mental health, developing work around building resilience, as well as supporting those who need it in response to traumatic events.</p><p>On 28 April, the Police Covenant for England Wales was enshrined in law as part of the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Act 2022. The Covenant will focus on health and wellbeing, physical protection and support for families, with a real emphasis on mental health support. This applies to current and former members of the police workforce. This does not mean that the police should be able to diagnose specific illnesses or disabilities, but they need to know when intervention from partner agencies – such as health professionals – may be necessary.</p><p> </p><p>Training on mental-ill health is integrated throughout the initial police learning programme which all new recruits must complete. Many individual forces have also developed their own training programmes, including joint training with partner agencies, including local Mental Health trusts.</p><p> </p><p>Street Triage schemes also exist, where mental health professionals and the police work together to co-ordinate the right response to people experiencing a mental health crisis. However, the 2018 report of Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire &amp; Rescue Services (HMICFRS) on policing and mental health recorded that mental health triage schemes were operational in 42 of the 43 police forces in England and Wales.</p><p>There have been a number of local and academic evaluations of such schemes, however HMICFRS noted that evaluation of schemes was not always consistent and recommended that all forces should review their arrangements using practice guidelines developed by the College of Policing to help forces benchmark their triage activity. HMICFRS will be inspecting on progress as part of their integrated PEEL assessments inspection framework. We plan to focus on physical protection for officers, their health and wellbeing and support for their families.</p><p>We are working with policing partners and other government departments to develop the detail of what will be covered by a Covenant. This will be followed by a public consultation.</p><p>We have also invested £7.5m in a new National Police Wellbeing Service (NPWS). The NPWS was launched in April 2019 and has developed evidence-based guidance, advice, tools and resources which can be accessed by forces, as well as individual officers and staff.
