star this property answer text
Since the UN High Commissioner of Human Rights' statement on 11 September, our Ambassador has raised the situation in Rakhine with Burmese Ministers and has set out our concerns about the violence, the large scale displacement of civilians, and the need for improved humanitarian access. The Foreign Secretary had earlier spoken to State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi on 7 September in similar terms and to underline the need for any allegations of human rights abuses to be investigated. Subsequently, at his press conference on 14 September, the Foreign Secretary described the situation in Rakhine as an “abomination”, and urged the displaced Rohingya to be allowed back and for the abuse of their human rights and killings to stop.
more like this

The continuation of this dispute which threatens the long-term security, stability and economies of States in the region is in no-one's interests. This is why the British Government wants to see Gulf unity restored and for all parties to take steps to build confidence.

That means Qatar's neighbours must ensure their demands are measured and realistic. Qatar also needs to take steps to engage on the substance of its neighbours' concerns and build on the progress already made on counter-terrorism and counter-radicalisation in partnership with other Gulf countries.

The Prime Minister, the Foreign Secretary and I have spoken regularly to our counterparts in the region, as well as to US, French and EU partners. UN Security Council Resolution 2334 addresses settlements while also calling for an end to incitement and terror. The resolution was passed on 23 December and asks the Secretary-General to report to the Council every three months on the implementation of its provisions.
