star this property answer text
A political settlement remains the only means for bringing long-term stability to Yemen – there is no military solution to the conflict. The Yemeni parties must engage constructively and in good faith to overcome obstacles and find a political solution to end the conflict. The UK continues to play a leading role in international efforts to achieve this goal. The Foreign Secretary discusses the military and political situation in Yemen with the Foreign Ministers of the United States of America, United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia regularly, and most recently on 23 January at our Embassy in Paris. In June last year the UK sponsored and coordinated a UN Security Council Presidential Statement, agreed on 15 June, which called upon the parties to the conflict to agree the modalities for a ceasefire, take steps to address the humanitarian crisis and restart political talks. We are now working urgently with our international and regional partners to ensure that the Security Council's words are converted into action. We support the appointment of the new UN Special Envoy for Yemen, and will work urgently to assist his efforts.

star this property answer text
On 22 January the Foreign Secretary announced an additional £2.5 million in funding to bolster the Yemeni peace process, including operations in Hodeidah city and port. This will complement UK diplomatic support for the UN, including through UK-led Security Council Resolutions 2451 and 2452, which build on the momentum generated by UN peace talks in Stockholm in December. We continue to discuss with the UN what further support the UK could provide as UN planning develops. It is important that all parties take steps to implement the Hodeidah Agreement in accordance with the UN Redeployment Coordination Committee and ensure unhindered access to food, medical and commercial supplies through the port of Hodeidah.
more like this

star this property answer text
The UK continues to fulfil its role as penholder on Yemen in the UN Security Council by coordinating sessions with the Security Council President that respond to developments in Yemen and the will of the Council as a whole. On Monday 19 November, the UK circulated a draft UN Security Council resolution calling for a cessation of hostilities, steps to improve the humanitarian situation, and support for the work of the UN Special Envoy Martin Griffiths. Both the Foreign Secretary and I have recently visited the Middle East to have constructive discussions with the Saudi-led Coalition on pathways to achieve de-escalation and reduce tensions. The Foreign Secretary was clear that both sides would need to play their part in confidence-building measures.
more like this
