star this property answer text
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs have been closely involved in the negotiations of the Preparatory Committee (PrepCom) to develop an international legally binding instrument under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea on the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity of areas beyond national jurisdiction.

The fourth session of the PrepCom adopted, by consensus, a set of recommendations to the UN General Assembly so that it could take a decision on convening an Inter-Governmental Conference to finalise the new treaty. There was overwhelming support to moving towards negotiation of the new treaty.

However, the textual elements recommended for consideration do not reflect consensus and we recognise that the negotiations on some aspects of the treaty may be difficult, in particular matters related to marine genetic resources and benefit sharing, and the relationship with existing competent bodies such as the International Maritime Organization and regional fishery management organisations.

star this property answer text
We are gravely concerned by the humanitarian impact of proposals to demolish the village of Susiya in the South Hebron Hills. The demolition could leave up to 100 people, half of them children, without shelter. Demolitions and evictions of Palestinians from their homes cause unnecessary suffering to ordinary Palestinians; call into question Israel’s commitment to a viable two-state solution; and, in all but the most exceptional of cases, are contrary to International Humanitarian Law. Officials from our Embassy in Tel Aviv have repeatedly raised our concerns with Israeli Ministers and senior officials, and urged them to cease this counter-productive policy, and provide a clear, transparent route to construction for Palestinians in Area C.
more like this

star this property answer text
The Government condemns all persecution on the grounds of religious identity, faith or belief and calls upon all state authorities to respect and protect the universal right to freedom of religion or belief. This policy is implemented both in multilateral fora through relevant resolutions at the UN Security Council, most recently Resolution 2379 on 21 September or Human Rights Council, and through raising cases of persecution in individual countries. I regularly raised this issue with my counterparts in the region, including on a visit to Pakistan on 8-9 November 2017. The FCO Magna Carter Fund for Human Rights and Democracy supports projects designed to promote greater tolerance and to create conditions less conducive to extremism and persecution.

more like this

We are working with Anguilla to finalise a Memorandum of Understanding on the terms for provision of support for its beneficial ownership system, and expect that its system will be established in the spring of 2018. Delays have been caused by a need to ensure value for money in the provision of funding and to put in place legislative drafting assistance. In the interim, Anguilla will respond to any requests for information from UK law enforcement authorities.

more like this
