	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 09/05/2019 answer text <p>The Foreign Secretary visited Myanmar on 19 and 20 September 2018 to visit northern Rakhine and to press Myanmar's leaders to take action. He also discussed the Fact-Finding Mission report with Aung San Suu Kyi. Minister Field spoke with the Myanmar Minister for International Cooperation Kyaw Tin on 1 November 2018 to stress the UK's serious concern at Myanmar's announcement, with Bangladesh, that refugee repatriation would begin despite suitable conditions not yet being in place in northern Rakhine.</p><p>In November 2018, the Foreign Secretary wrote a joint letter with the French Foreign Minister making clear to the Myanmar authorities that its Commission of Inquiry needs to be an independent and credible mechanism that will lead to a judicial process in order to deliver accountability for the atrocities committed. The British Ambassador continues to have regular discussions with senior Myanmar officials about the Rohingya people.</p><p>On 18 March I met with U Thaung Tun, the Myanmar Union Minister for Investment and Foreign Economic Relations and National Security Advisor and again raised the issue of conditions in Rakhine and the importance of long term social and economic development in Rakhine to improve prospects for all, including the Rohingya.</p><p> </p> answering member constituency Cities of London and Westminster answering member printed Mark Field question first answered 09/05/2019 13:13:22 answering member 1405 label Biography information for Mark Field

The UK is one of the largest bilateral humanitarian donors in Rakhine State, contributing over £18m since 2012. We regularly raise the underlying political problems and human rights abuses both bilaterally and in international fora, where for several years the UK has sponsored Resolutions at both the UN Human Rights Council and General Assembly. The UK raises the humanitarian situation of the Rohingya with the government of Burma at every opportunity. Most recently in relation to the crisis in the Andaman Sea, I called the Burmese Ambassador to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office on 18 May to make clear the need for an urgent humanitarian response and regional coordination. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 16/10/2017 answer text <p>On 7 and 17 September, the Foreign Secretary spoke to State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi to express the UK's concerns about the situation in Rakhine and to call for an end to the violence in Rakhine State, safe return for refugees, full humanitarian access and implementation of the Annan Commission's recommendations. On 18 September, the Foreign Secretary hosted a meeting in New York with other Foreign Ministers, Burma's National Security Adviser U Thaung Tun and Minister of State for Foreign Affairs U Kyaw Tin, to urge Burma to heed the United Nations Security Council's call for immediate steps to end the violence in Rakhine.
