Nationality is self-reported within the NHS human resources and payroll system, the electronic staff record.</p><p>As of 31 March 2017, latest data available, there are now 61,934 (headcount) European Union nationals (excluding the United Kingdom), or 5.2% employed in the NHS trusts and clinical commissioning groups. There are 75,450 other overseas nationals, or 6.4% employed in the NHS. 80,822 NHS staff records do not contain nationality data, with people either choosing not to specify their nationality or not asked to.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>In October 2016, the Government announced a historic expansion of medical school places increasing medical school places in England by 1,500. The first 500 places have already been allocated and will be available to students in September 2018. The remaining 1,000 additional medical school places would be available to medical schools in England via a competitive bidding process managed jointly by the Higher Education Funding Council for England and Health Education England.</p><p> </p><p>We have also announced a 25% increase in nurse training places to provide at least 5,000 extra nurse training places every year from 2018/19 - 25,850 from 2018/19 compared to 20,680 in 2016/17.</p><p> </p><p>National Health Service workforce training in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales are matters for the devolved administrations in each of those countries.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>Following a detailed public consultation that ran from December 2015 to March 2016, the Government set out in its response to that consultation in February 2017 that it intended to amend the existing Charging Regulations. Over the course of the consultation and decision-making process, the Government carefully considered the impact the changes may have on public health, health inequalities and on vulnerable groups. The regulations providing for these changes were introduced on 19 July 2017 alongside a published impact assessment which estimated that the net income per annum as a result of the new regulations would be up to £40 million per year. While the Government monitors the implementation of the regulations and their effects, no further estimates on the net income have been made since the publication of the impact assessment.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>The number of overseas citizens working in the United Kingdom in hospitals and care homes is not collected centrally.</p><p> </p><p>The Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC) publishes data on the number of staff working in National Health Service hospital and community health services in England. The HSCIC also publishes data on the nationality of NHS staff, which is a self-reported field within the NHS human resources and payroll system, the electronic staff record (ESR). The nationality information entered by an individual employee onto ESR may reflect their cultural heritage rather than their country of birth.</p><p> </p><p>From the 1,151,138 headcount number of staff working in NHS trusts and clinical commissioning groups as at September 2015, 1,056,773 have self-declared their nationality. Of these, 217,063 (21%) have declared as having nationalities other than British.</p><p> </p><p>Skills for Care, the partner in the Sector Skills Council for social care, collects information on the nationality of the adult social care workforce in England.</p><p> </p><p>Skills for Care estimates that there were on average 135,000 residential care job roles filled by non-British adult social care workers in England in 2015.</p>
